So beautifully written by David Swenson, “only a breath between life and death” ❤️
All great teachings remind us that life in this physical world is temporary. Our logical minds accept this realization and understanding of our finite existence, but they do not prepare us for the sudden loss of loved ones, teachers, family, and friends. Sharath’s sudden passing has shocked us all, leaving a palpable sadness within the Ashtanga community, including myself.
I met Sharath in Mysore, India, when he was 6. Over the decades, I watched as he grew and evolved from a shy little boy dreaming of playing cricket into a dedicated practitioner of Ashtanga Yoga and ultimately into an influential figure who inspired thousands of his students worldwide through dedication to practicing and sharing what he learned on his journey.
He is now uniting us in his passing as we attempt to honor the legacy he left behind. Gatherings and remembrance ceremonies are being organized around the globe, a testament to Sharath's impact on the international yoga community. These functions are essential for the grieving process. In the long run, the most extraordinary way to honor Sharath is to continue practicing and sharing the love and joy we felt during our time with him.
Whenever we visited Mysore, and it was time to leave, Sharath’s grandfather, Pattabhi Jois, would look us in the eye with a brilliant smile and say, “Happy Journeys,” as a blessing for our departure.
Blessings and Happy Journeys, Sharath.
WE LOVE YOU!
