When it comes to arranging for care, the amount you have to pay will depend on the degree of care you require to suit your individual needs.

This means that the price depends on what tasks / activities are included as part of your care service. It will also be dependant on the time duration of the care service, i.e. how many hours of care will be provided daily, weekly, and for how many months.

The amount you have to pay will also depend on the value of your assets. As this dictates how much financial help you may be entitled to from your local authority.

We’ve got some great tips to help when talking to your loved one about care.

Many older people will refuse to admit when they could do with some help. They don’t like to acknowledge that they are struggling, and they often have a fear of losing all independence. Or even worse, they fear becoming a burden to you.

Something to think about, is being mindful of whether your aging loved one is still safe to drive.

There isn’t a set legal age at which a person’s driving license has to be forfeited. But, as a person gets older, their eyesight and reaction time declines. This means that they are more likely to be involved in an accident whilst behind the wheel. And it is not just the safety of your aging loved one that you should worry about. It is the risk that they may pose to other drivers, cyclists, or pedestrians too.

Arranging for a “Needs Assessment” to get Care

In order to organise care for your loved one, you will first need your loved one to have a “Needs Assessment”.

A Needs Assessment is provided free of charge by your local authority. It can either be arranged through your loved one’s GP or through adult social care services.

It is very easy to obtain – all you have to do is contact your local authority and ask for one!

Your local authority will then be better able to advise you of options available for your loved one. And they can suggest a course of action, i.e. a “Care Plan”. Also, they can inform you of any benefits you or your loved one may be eligible for. This can include Attendance Allowance.
