The well! It now sits in the corner of the kitchen and you can peek through a cut out in the worktop to see it. It was so nice and clean once I'd dug it out and washed all the bricks, but now it has taken on a new life!!

Elizabeth I was on the throne when this house was built in the 1560s. I'd love to time travel and see what it was like then!

Elizabeth I died in 1603.

The daughter of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, she succeeded her half-sister Mary I and reigned for 45 years.

Thousands of people turned out to see her funeral procession to the Abbey, and she was buried in a magnificent tomb in the Lady Chapel which was paid for by James I. Her effigy wears a crown and gilded collar and holds an orb and sceptre.

This house was built in 1567. Everything was worked by hand, I find that incredible! These nails may not be as old as the original timber frame, but each was hand made. I had to keep them, I have boxes of them!!!

‘A square peg in a round hole’. We’ve all heard the phrase- someone who doesn’t meet expectations, doesn’t quite fit the mould. We’ve probably all felt like a square peg in a round hole at some time in our lives. But fear not!!! Those clever Tudor carpenters constructing timber frame houses used square pegs in round holes ON PURPOSE! Because they were the best and strongest fit for the job! The wedge effect created by the square peg in the round hole, created the strongest fastening, one which has held up in this house and many like it for over 500 years! A round dowel would have shrunk and wiggled itself loose. So don’t lose hope. You might sometimes feel like you don’t quite fit, but square pegs in round holes are actually the best fit for the job!
