❓In a survey of our carers who started working as care assistants and support workers after the age of 50, 98% said they would recommend becoming a carer later in life.

Reasons for embarking on a second chapter career included:

💜Menopause Matters - mythbusting edition!

Menopause is a natural stage of life, experienced by 50% of the population, yet it is still misunderstood, and until recently, awareness of the menopause and peri-menopause was generally low.

🤯On the flip side, these days there is a lot of information available online, and we are often bombarded on social media by conflicting advice. So just for starters, we've tackled some long-standing myths as Menopause Month comes to a close.

👍As a menopause-friendly employer, we have menopause champions who can provide guidance on all aspects of the menopause and peri-menopause, whether colleagues are experiencing it themselves, or supporting someone who is.

Some heartwarming from our fabulous colleagues who go above and beyond to deliver compassionate care. 💜

1. Leeds' Carer of the Month Steve - awarded for exceptional dedication to his clients, including fulfilling a client's final wishes concerning where his ashes were scattered. 💙

2. A huge well done to Tayside & Fife carer Richmond on his SVQ 2 qualification. His team say: "His commitment to improving his skills is commendable, and it directly contributes to the high standard of care we provide." Congratulations Richmond! 🙌

3. South Tyneside Carers of the Month Tafadzwa and Annette.
Both have recently joined the South Tyneside team and their care work has been outstanding. 👏

4. 🍿Movie Matinee at Nightingale Lodge watching the musical Cats on a drizzly afternoon. Popcorn and ice lollies served by the usherettes brought a smile to the residents' faces 😀

5. 🎀Fun and laughter for Breast Cancer Awareness with the Colwyn Bay team, whilst discussing the importance of checking your breasts on a regular basis. All staff were also given information from the charity Coppafeel. It's good to talk and to share our experiences - it could save a life 💗

REMINDER: The clocks go back tonight, meaning some of us get an extra hour in bed 🙌 and those of us on the night shift have a slightly longer night 😐

We are now heading towards winter, with less hours of daylight and darker nights drawing in. It's also colds and flu season, which usually sees our sector and the NHS under extra 'winter pressure'.

1. Two of our Sheffield team attended the memory walk in aid of the Alzheimer's society raising over £230. Well done team! 🙌
2. Isle of Wight branch carer Stella completed a skydive at 11,000 feet earlier this year and we can now report she raised over £700 for the local Alzheimer's charity. Well done Stella! 🛩️
3.A huge congratulations to Kingston-upon-Thames carer Jewell! Jewell was recognised for excellence in supporting clients, showing kindness, compassion, and a flexible approach that truly makes a difference. Well done, Jewell – keep shining!✨
4.Stoke & Staffordshire carer Sharon celebrated 15 years service
Sharon has been at the heart of the team, providing exceptional care to those we support but also guiding and mentoring so many of our new carers. 💫

Lorraine carried out CPR and managed to stabilise a client until the paramedics arrived.
Lisa was nominated by one of her colleagues for giving amazing guidance and for improving the level of care clients receive.

This Menopause Awareness Day we're encouraging our carers who might be experiencing symptoms to look after their wellbeing.💜

Giving a thought to self-care can always be helpful and what's often recommended to tackle menopause symptoms is 'lifestyle medicine' - looking after your sleep, diet, exercise and stress awareness.

And if being told to look after your sleep, diet, exercise and stress gives you anger management issues, we hear you! It's not going to solve everything, but it may help.🙂

Meet Maureen 💜
At 73, Maureen is a shining example of how life experience and a desire to help others can lead to a deeply fulfilling career later in life. After two decades in customer care at BT, Maureen embarked on a second chapter, discovering her true calling as a care assistant with Cera at our Halton branch. Her story demonstrates the value that individuals over 50 bring to the care sector, and how rewarding it can be.
