Therapist vs Coach – what’s the difference? 🤍
This is a question I get asked a lot, so let’s clear it up.
A therapist
Therapy often focuses on healing the past.
Therapists are trained to diagnose and treat mental health conditions, work with trauma, and support people through deep emotional pain, grief, or clinical anxiety/depression.
Sessions often explore why you feel the way you do and where those patterns came from.
A coach
Coaching is more present- and future-focused.
A coach helps you understand what’s happening now, what you want to change, and how to move forward.
Rather than diagnosing, coaching is about building tools, confidence, awareness, and momentum so you can cope better and create change in your day-to-day life.
So where do I fit in?
As a STILL Method coach and menopause coach, my work sits firmly in the coaching space.
I support people who feel anxious, overwhelmed, stuck, or “not like themselves anymore” — especially during life transitions like menopause — and want practical, gentle tools to feel calmer and more in control.
The STILL Method is a simple, body-based approach that helps calm your nervous system, reduce anxiety, and stop spirals in the moment — so you’re not constantly fighting your thoughts or feelings.
Alongside this, I work through my 5 Steps to Wellbeing, which focus on:
calming the body
understanding what’s really driving your anxiety or overwhelm
building awareness without judgement
creating supportive daily habits
growing confidence and trust in yourself
It’s not about digging endlessly into the past — it’s about learning how to support yourself now and moving forward with more ease.
So which is better?
Neither is “better” — they’re just different.
Therapy is powerful if you need to process trauma, complex mental health issues, or deep emotional wounds.
Coaching can be incredibly supportive if you want practical tools, nervous-system support, and guidance to feel calmer, stronger, and more like you again.
Many people use both at different stages of their journey 💛
Coaching isn’t about “fixing” you — it’s about reminding you that you already have what you need, and showing you how to access it.
