On 20th February, we held another Cancer Awareness Session where important conversations took place in a safe and supportive space. Nagina Kaleem shared her personal Cancer journey and spoke about general concepts and misconceptions about Cancer within South Asian communities. She also covered what Cancer is, reliable sources of information, the most common types of Cancer, available screening programmes, recognising early signs and symptoms and guidance on where to seek help.
We were honoured to hear from Cancer Survivor Mrs. Surjit Sroa, who spoke powerfully about the importance and life-saving benefits of early screening. Liz Havill - Director of Cross-Culture Hub shared her thanks to everyone who attended and contributed.
We especially want to thank to Alison Wilson, Community Engagement Officer at Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, Mr Kelly, Founder and Station Manager of Unity 101 Community Radio, Southampton and Miss Rita, a member of Rotary International in Great Britain & Ireland Direct Membership from Bournemouth, for their valued support in attending our event.
Although attendance was lower than expected due to the mid-term break and rainy weather, those who joined participated actively in open discussions, shared experiences, enjoyed refreshments and found the session informative and helpful in normalising conversations about Cancer. It also encouraged people to seek early detection, reduce fear and promote hope — something that can save lives.
