Starting therapy can feel a bit like standing at the edge of something new. You might be curious, hopeful, nervous, or all of those at once.

Here are three things we often wish people knew before their first session:

1️⃣ You don’t need to know what to say. Therapy isn’t a test. We start where you are.
2️⃣ It’s okay if it feels awkward at first. New conversations often are.
3️⃣ Therapy isn’t about being “fixed”, it’s about understanding yourself better and finding ways forward that feel right for you.

If you’ve been wondering whether therapy might help, that wondering already matters 💜

Self-compassion is often misunderstood. Many people worry it means letting themselves off the hook, making excuses, or lowering standards.

Psychologically, the opposite is true.

Research shows that self-compassion supports resilience, motivation, and emotional regulation. When we respond to ourselves with understanding rather than criticism, the nervous system settles. From that place, change becomes more possible, not less.

Harsh self-talk may feel familiar, but it often keeps people stuck. Compassion creates safety, and safety is what allows growth.

This doesn’t mean ignoring responsibility or avoiding difficult conversations. It means approaching yourself with the same care you would offer someone you genuinely want to help.

Self-compassion isn’t a reward for doing well. It’s a foundation for coping, learning, and moving forward.

Practise this quick pause, no fixing required 👀

Ask yourself:
• What’s taking up most of my mental space right now?
• What feels slightly heavy?
• What feels even a little bit supportive?

That’s it.

Mental health check-ins don’t have to be deep or dramatic. Sometimes noticing what’s present is enough to soften it.

You don’t have to solve anything today. Awareness alone can be regulating.

By the end of January, many people feel a quiet pressure to “have it together” by now. To see results. To feel different. But growth doesn’t work to a calendar.

Your pace is shaped by your history, your nervous system, your circumstances, and what you’re carrying right now. Trusting it doesn’t mean giving up, it means listening more closely.

You don’t need to catch up.
You don’t need to rush ahead.
You’re allowed to move in a way that feels sustainable.

Sometimes the most meaningful progress is invisible from the outside, but deeply felt on the inside 💜

For many people, rest isn’t actually restful. When we slow down, thoughts can get louder. Guilt may creep in. There can be a sense that we’re “wasting time” or falling behind.

Psychologically, this often links to how we’ve learned to value ourselves. If worth has been tied to productivity, achievement, or being needed - rest can feel unfamiliar or even unsafe.

The nervous system also plays a role. When we’re used to being in a state of constant doing, slowing down can initially increase discomfort rather than reduce it.

This doesn’t mean rest isn’t working. It means your system is adjusting.

Rest is a skill, not a switch. It often needs practice, permission, and support. Over time, it can become a place of regulation rather than guilt.

Rest isn’t something you earn. It’s something you need.

Things we often think are "laziness" are actually signs of being human 👀

🧠 A tired nervous system
😴 Burnout or overload
📉 Low mood or motivation
🌀 Decision fatigue
💭 Too much going on at once

Many people are incredibly hard on themselves for not functioning at full capacity all the time. But bodies and brains aren’t machines.

Before judging yourself, it can help to ask: What might be going on underneath this?

Compassion often creates more movement than criticism ever could.

There’s a lot of noise about how life should look. How quickly you should heal. How productive you should be. How confident you should feel by now.

But your way doesn’t have to match anyone else’s.

You’re allowed to take a different route. To move slowly. To pause. To try something and change your mind. To need support. To define progress on your own terms.

Doing things differently isn’t failure. Often, it’s self-respect.

Wherever you are right now, it’s enough to start from here 💜

We often talk about wanting change. Better habits. Healthier relationships. A different way of feeling in ourselves. And yet, when change actually starts to happen, it can feel deeply uncomfortable.

From a psychological perspective, this makes sense. Our brains are wired for familiarity, not happiness. Even patterns that don’t serve us can feel safer simply because they are known. Change asks our nervous system to tolerate uncertainty, and uncertainty can trigger anxiety, doubt, or a strong urge to retreat to what feels familiar.

This doesn’t mean you are resistant or “doing it wrong”. Feeling unsettled can be a sign that something new is forming. Growth often comes with wobble, grief for what’s being left behind, and moments of self-questioning.

Rather than pushing through or giving up, it can help to slow down and ask:
What feels unfamiliar here?
What feels risky?
What support might I need as I adjust?

Sustainable change happens when it’s approached with compassion, pacing, and understanding. Discomfort doesn’t mean stop. Sometimes it simply means you’re in the middle of something meaningful.
