This week I attended the Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme’s 2024 conference - Enhancing Health, Empowering Performance. It was a great few days worth of networking and I took away lots of information taking from the latest research.

My top tips from the conference!

1 - Get your 8 hours of sleep every night - it can really impact your physical and mental wellbeing.

2 - Practice and training is only beneficial if effective recovery systems are in place.

3- Being sedentary can undo all of the benefits that workouts can have - take regular breaks and get your steps in!

I am pleased to say that I am now a qualified Mental Health First Aider.

To me, mental health is just as important as physical health and shouldn’t be neglected.

One of the biggest things that I preach as both a psychologist and cricket coach is the idea that making mistakes is natural. No one likes making errors but ultimately that is how we learn and develop as people and athletes.

New Research! 📝🧐

A meta-analysis by Noetel et al. (2024) investigated the effects of exercise on depressive symptoms. The research collated results from 218 different studies involving over 14,000 different participants and aimed to compare the role of exercise in reducing depression when compared to therapy interventions and medication.

The findings are as follows:
1. Exercise is an effective treatment for depression
2. Walking 🚶‍♀️, yoga 🧘 and strength training 🏋️‍♂️ being the most effective exercise
3. Exercise was found to be equally as effective no matter the severity of depression
4. Effects were stronger for group exercise

The results pose certain questions:
1. Should the NHS be subscribing exercise as an intervention to depression? - How would you take this as a patient?
2. Should governing bodies be doing more to reduce barriers to exercise? If so, what?
