Global Day of Parents

For me, parenting has been a long, challenging journey of letting go of the expectations of how things would be to surrendering to how they actually are. From the very beginning, when my water's broke at 34 weeks with my first baby, I resisted what was happening - "this isn't how I'd expected, or wanted it to be!" After bringing my son home from hospital, he was unable to breast feed for various reasons and again, I thought, "This isn't how it was meant to be!" I cried, resisted, got angry and withdrawn, and then eventually through support from my friends, family and therapist. I softened into a new reality of pumping my milk for him - a journey that continued for nearly 5 years, as my second son also had feeding difficulties.

As my boys started to grow, I noticed that they were developing differently from how I expected - they were reaching certain milestones way earlier than expected and others way later. I'd never even heard of neurodivergence, but looking back, it was there to see. We've had so many challenges along the way to having their neurotype officially recognised - we've experienced years of them experiencing sensory overwhelm, violent meltdowns, being unable to leave the house and being misunderstood by friends and professionals. We got some brilliant help from an occupational therapist and also a child psychologist - he mainly worked with me and their dad. Together, as a family, we started to understand each other, what we need and what we don't need. I found my voice in advocating for them and their needs. I realised I needed my own trauma therapy to process their births and some of the more violent aspects of their meltdowns. It felt transformational and led to me being able to stop having a trauma response to their triggers and maintain a safe and calm base for them. Over the years, my children have taught me patience I never knew I was capable of and shown me an inner strength I never knew I had.

They've shown me daily that I need to let go of the parent I thought I'd be to become the mother they actually need.

What to expect during Birth or Perinatal Trauma therapy with me:

You will always receive a free 15 minute telephone consultation. This is to allow you to get a feel for me and how I work, and to see if I would be a good fit for you. (I am always happy to recommend you to someone else, should you feel I am unable to offer you what you need.)

If you’re happy to proceed, we can book in our first appointment.

- During the first session, I will listen to you and discover how your trauma or stuck feelings are negatively impacting on you. Together, we will identify changes you’d like to make and your goal for therapy moving forward. (This might include an assessment of PTSD symptoms and emotional needs.)

You will leave this first session with a plan for moving forward and what will be covered in the following sessions;

My 4-stage treatment plan covers the following stages;

1. Understanding how your trauma is negatively impacting on you and building your capacity to process it.
2. Gently processing your trauma or stuck emotions.
3. Integration of processing.
4. Maintenance and moving forward into post-traumatic growth.

For some people, this can take 3-4 sessions, and for others it can take up to 6 sessions. Everyone approaches their therapy differently and there is no pressure to reach any goal at any particular time.

Recognising you may need support is a brave first step and I'd be happy to assist you along the way.

* Mental Health Awareness Week *

In her ground breaking research, Dr Candace Pert, the cellular biologist proved that there was no mind-body connection, only the mind-body or body-mind. They cannot be separated. Read about her scientific research in the book ‘The Molecules of Emotion’.

Mental health awareness week highlights the need to raise awareness that the body-mind experiences many physical sensations as the direct result of trauma, including anxiety. These sensations will vary from person to person and can dramatically impact health and wellbeing. They include:

- Nightmares
- Hypervigilance
- Anxiety
- Shut down
- Flashbacks
- Hyperarousal
- Tension
- Intense and disturbing emotional reactions that seem out of place or proportion

If you're looking for a holistic approach to addressing any trauma you're currently living with, please get in touch.
