How long would you have to wait for hernia surgery? For many people, that’s the first question.

Across parts of the NHS, waiting times for hernia surgery can now exceed 12–18 months, and in some areas surgery may only be offered once symptoms become severe.

At Hernia Clinic Hampshire, we can typically offer surgery within one to three weeks of your consultation.

For some patients, particularly those who are self-employed or work in physical jobs, quicker access can mean protecting income, independence and the ability to work safely.

For others, especially those who are retired, it’s about being able to schedule surgery around holidays or personal commitments, and getting back to the activities you love.

Either way, having clarity and control over timing makes a real difference. Find out your options and book a consultation: https://ow.ly/S00650YwSUg

Ready to return to the hobbies you love, but needing guidance on how? Our hernia rehabilitation exercises are designed to support healing before and after surgery, helping you achieve the best long-term result. But how do they work?

👉 Build your your strength - strengthening your core muscles helps support the abdominal wall and reduce the risk of a hernia coming back.

👉 Improve long-term comfort - gentle, guided exercises help improve the flexibility of the healing tissue and influence how the scar remodels. This can reduce tension around the repair site and be more comfortable.

👉 Supporting healing after surgery - early, safe mobility improves blood flow, supports tissue healing and begins rebuilding abdominal strength at a gradual, controlled pace.

Even before surgery, these exercises can help strengthen your abdominal muscles and manage symptoms safely. Learn more about our Hernia Recovery Programme exercises: https://ow.ly/oPPt50YwSN0

It was a joy for our entire team to read the below patient’s kind words and recommendation of us. We are happy to have helped him feel well-informed and confident.

“Kept well informed prior to op ie before hospital admission, whilst waiting to go down for surgery by Mr Kirkby-Bott, Anaesthetist and nursing staff.

Felt very assured by Mr Kirkby-Bott and also short wait time for op.

I chose Hernia clinic Hampshire after initial consultation with Mr Kirkby-Bott for 2 reasons, one being the short waiting time for surgery but mainly because it was very apparent that Mr Kirby-Bott is a very competent and confident surgeon, Is a good listener and made me feel relaxed and confident about having surgery. (Also confirmed by reading many reviews). Would definitively recommend.” – 72-year-old male inguinal hernia patient

Are you turning down plans because you're not sure how you'll feel? Hernia surgery might be for you.

Every patient who comes to Hernia Clinic Hampshire is carefully assessed by our consultant surgeon, James Kirkby-Bott.

What’s important is that not everyone needs surgery.

Your consultation is about clarity. We’ll confirm whether you have a hernia, assess how it’s affecting you, and talk through your options. In some cases, that may mean monitoring, lifestyle advice or support garments rather than an operation.

Our priority isn’t getting you onto an operating table, it’s making sure you have the right information, the right plan and confidence about your next steps.

Many people assume hernia surgery means being fully unconscious. But at Hernia Clinic Hampshire, we offer the option to undergo surgery with local anaesthetic and light sedation.

Local anaesthetic completely numbs the area being treated, while sedation helps you feel calm, relaxed and comfortable throughout the procedure.

One important advantage of using local anaesthetic is that during the procedure, our Consultant Surgeon James may gently ask you to cough. Because you’re comfortable and able to respond, he can assess the repair in real time and confirm it is secure before finishing the operation.

It’s a simple step, but an important one. Local anaesthetic with sedation allows careful assessment during surgery, while avoiding the physical stress of a full general anaesthetic.

Every patient is assessed individually to decide what’s safest and most appropriate. Book a consultation with us to find out what works best for you: https://ow.ly/pv5a50Yq88E

We are proud to be the sole UK distributor of Orione specialist hernia support garments, made in Italy and designed specifically to support safe, structured recovery.

Importantly, these are not traditional trusses. Unlike a truss, the hernia pants provide greater compression, more secure support and improved comfort, which is why we recommend them over a standard truss.

Hernias aren’t just an issue for men.

Because hernias are often talked about as something that mainly affects men, many women don’t realise they can develop them too — and symptoms may be overlooked or diagnosis delayed.

Women can develop any kind of hernia, including:

👉 Inguinal hernias - this is the most common type of groin hernia, with symptoms including a lump or a pulling or aching sensation.

👉 Umbilical hernias – a swelling or bulge near the belly button. These can develop after pregnancy due to stretching of the abdominal wall.

👉 Incisional hernias – these can occur along the line of a previous abdominal scar, including after a Caesarean section. You might notice a lump, pulling sensation, or discomfort around your scar — especially when coughing, lifting or straining.

👉 Femoral hernias – more common in women than men. These appear as a small lump or ache in the upper thigh or groin area. They may not always be obvious, but can cause discomfort when standing, lifting or exercising.

Hernia care isn’t one-size-fits-all. Every patient deserves clear answers, careful assessment and the right support - regardless of gender.

If you notice a lump, swelling, dragging feeling, or discomfort that doesn’t feel “normal,” it’s worth getting checked.

Trust your body. If something feels different, seek advice.
