Sadly Reginald died in 1958 leaving behind his wife Alice and their children. Running the business together they would see lots of changes not only in Southampton but in the wider publics attitude towards the funeral service, moving from the majority of services being burial services to a majority of cremation services. Despite the changes in service type we kept looking after the loved ones of Southampton and the wider area with the same care and attention.

Examples of the Hearses we used during this time can be seen in the photos above. On the left the Austin Princess Hearse which we were using during the 1950s and on the right a Daimler DS420 which quickly became the funeral car of choice for the area with most companies using them.

Sadly Alice passed away in 1970, Bernard in 1983 and Reggie in 1985 leaving behind Arthur to run the business with his wife Pam. Arthur and Pam’s sons John and Chris joined the business in 1987 and 1989 respectively. Sadly after Arthur died in 1998 Pam decided to take less of a role in the managing of the business and left John and Chris to run the business which they have been doing ever since.

Having moved to our current location at 17 St Denys Road in the early 1900s, sadly Jonathan wouldn’t get to see much of the new premises as he died in 1906 leaving behind his wife Jane and adopted son Reginald to run the family business. Unfortunately Jane died in 1913 leaving Reginald to run the family business aged only 26. Throughout these turbulent years Reginald kept looking after the grieving families of Southampton and the wider area.

Staying at home during the First World War to run the business, Reginald married his wife Alice in 1914. Over the next 14 years they would have 4 children together; Greta, Bernard, May and Arthur. Reginald and Alice brought their children into the business once they were old enough. Together they would run the business for the next 30 years and in that time looking after thousands of families establishing J Lawrence and Sons as one of the go to funeral directors in the area.

Born in Beaminster, Dorset in C.1840 Jonathan Lawrence moved to Southampton in the late 1850s where he was working as a carpenter. Marrying his wife Jane in 1861 together they had 2 children Arthur (1863) and Charles (1867). They set up the family business in 1870. Unfortunately they lost both Arthur and Charles when they were in their early 20s. Despite their great loss Jonathan and Jane continued to help support the grieving families of Southampton. Still wanting to have a family they adopted Reginald Lallow after his father died in 1889.

Originally the business was based in St Marys Road before moving to the current location in St Deny’s Road.
