I turned a year older this weekend 🎂

And more than anything, it felt like a reminder that
birthdays are a gift in themselves.

Another year of life.
Also a chance to pause.
To reflect.

Because the past year has been… a lot.

A proper sandwich generation year.
The kind that stretches you in ways you don’t expect.

And more than once, I caught myself thinking…

👉 I wouldn’t have been able to deal with this a few years ago.

Not because life was easier.
But because I wasn’t looking after myself properly.

These days, I feel different.

Stronger — physically.
More steady — emotionally.

Not perfect.
Just… more resourceful.

Even now, with a little health wobble in the background,
I notice how I’m approaching it.

Less panic.
More pragmatism.
More trust that I’ll get through it.

And that doesn’t happen by accident.

It comes from the small things, done consistently, over time.

That’s what I mean when I talk about banking health.

Not just for the good days.
But for the ones that really test you.

And for that, I’m really grateful. And ready for the year to come 🌸

Everyone gets to be young.
Not everyone is lucky enough to grow old.

A gentle reminder to look after ourselves now…

Not perfectly.
Just consistently.

Because how we show up today
shapes how we get to live tomorrow.

Back to real life this week… with a bit of a nerve pain flare-up to manage.

Not ideal. Very frustrating.

But equally a good reminder of something I see a lot in midlife:

👉 Progress isn’t about pushing through everything.
👉 It’s about knowing when to adapt.

So right now, things look a bit different for me:
No running
No heavy lifting
Gentle movement
Lots of lying down 🤪
And a positive mindset — this will pass

Not because I’ve gone backwards.
But because I want to keep moving forward — long term.

This isn’t falling behind.
It’s banking health.

Sometimes the news cycle can feel overwhelming.

Wars. Politics. Global uncertainty.

It’s easy to feel like the world is spinning in directions we can’t influence.

But I keep coming back to what is within my control.

Fueling well.
Moving my body.
Recovering properly.
Helping people build strength, energy and confidence.

And living more of every day.

That’s what banking health looks like.

In midlife, ignoring your body isn’t toughness. It’s poor strategy.

This morning I stopped my run after 2 km.

Nothing dramatic.
Just my back telling me something wasn’t quite right.

Ten years ago I would probably have pushed through.
Finished the session.
Called it discipline.
And made it worse.

But midlife has given me a bit of a superpower:

Listening to my body.

Because sometimes the smartest training decision
is knowing when to stop.

Stopping today often means you can keep moving tomorrow.

That’s not weakness.

That’s power.

And that’s what banking health looks like.

A lot of people think midlife decline is inevitable.

But very often what I see is something much simpler.

People trying to keep the same habits they had when they were younger.

Less sleep.
Poor fuelling.
Training hard but recovering poorly.
Running on stress and caffeine.

Many of us got away with it in our twenties.

Midlife doesn’t mean decline.

It often just means the body now asks for updated habits and better support.

Better sleep.
Better fuelling.
Strength training.
Recovery.

Small upgrades.

Big health deposits.

One of the fastest ways to feel like you’re declining in midlife is comparison.

Comparing yourself to your younger self.
How fast you used to run.
How easily you used to recover.

But there’s another trap I see a lot.

Trying to keep the same habits you had when you were younger.

Little sleep.
Poor nutrition.
Stress on repeat.
Training hard but not supporting the body properly.

Many of us got away with that in our twenties.

Midlife is different.

Not because we’re “declining”,
but because the body now asks for better support.

Better sleep.
Better fueling.
Stress management.
More recovery.

Midlife isn’t about competing with your younger self.
It’s about building the version of you that lasts.

That’s what banking health looks like.

Every year I find myself thinking the same thing.

Why do we still need International Women’s Day?

Of course the intention is good — to recognise women and their achievements.

But the fact that we still need a reminder says a lot.

As the mum of an amazing woman, my hope is that she can thrive in a world where she doesn’t need a special day to be recognised.

Where her strength, ideas and abilities are simply seen for what they are.

Not because laws say women must be included.
Not because a calendar tells us to notice.

But because she is who she is, regardless of her gender.

That’s the world I hope she gets to live in.

Equality will be the day we don’t need this day anymore.

There’s something to be said about listening to your body rather than your watch.

This morning I didn’t look at my watch once at Parkrun.

No pace checks.
No chasing numbers.

Just running by feel.

I ran with a smile on my face, out of my comfort zone… but controlled.
The kind of effort where you know you’re working, but everything still feels right.

Mile 1 – easing in
Mile 2 – finding flow
Mile 3 – stronger
Last stretch – go me 😀

When I finished, I already felt it had been a good run — before even looking at the stats.

The data just reflected my experience.

It reminded me that one of the most valuable skills in training
is learning to recognise effort without always needing the data.

Turns out the body sometimes knows more than the watch. 🤷‍♀️

Midlife training isn’t about chasing numbers.

It’s about learning how your body works, respecting it, and building strength and energy that lasts.

That’s what banking health looks like.

How about you?
Do you run by feel… or by the watch?
