This is Patricia, a resident at one of our care homes enjoying a performance from a live singer. She shared how listening to music helps bring back precious memories and moments from her past.đŸŽ¶đŸ’œ

As Dementia Action Week continues, we are taking a closer look at the benefits of music therapy for people living with dementia.

According to Dementia UK:
‱ Music can help a person with dementia connect with the past by evoking memories, feelings and experiences that they might otherwise find hard to express.
‱ Certain types of music can reduce distress and provide comfort, especially classical music or songs from a happy time in a person’s life.
‱ Music can encourage mental stimulation and support engagement.

Seeing Patricia reconnect with treasured memories through music was truly heartwarming and reminds us of the powerful impact music can have on wellbeing, connection and joy. đŸ©”

As we begin Dementia Action Week, we’ll be sharing daily posts to help raise awareness, challenge misconceptions, and promote understanding around dementia care.đŸ©”

Today, we’re starting with a common myth vs fact.

❌ Myth: Residents with dementia are unaware of their surroundings and can no longer enjoy activities that they once loved.
✅ Fact: Even when communication becomes more difficult, people living with dementia can still experience joy, connection, and continue enjoying many of the activities, hobbies, and moments they’ve always loved.

By understanding dementia better, we can help create more compassionate, person-centred support for those living with it every day.

Help us raise awareness by sharing this post and supporting better understanding around dementia.

Also, stay tuned throughout the week for more dementia facts, awareness posts, and ways we can all support those affected by dementia.🧠

Despite the gloomy weather outside, this afternoon certainly lifted everyone’s mood here at the home!

As part of Dementia Awareness Week, we were delighted to welcome singer Neil Wokey, who entertained our residents with a wonderful afternoon of music and memories. Neil began with introductions and theme tunes from 1950s radio and TV programmes, encouraging residents to listen carefully and reminisce together. He chatted with everyone throughout the performance, asking if they remembered the songs - and many certainly did!

Everyone was actively listening, singing along, smiling, and enjoying every moment. The music brought back so many happy memories and created a lovely atmosphere throughout the home.

Neil performed a fantastic selection of classics including songs by Elvis Presley, Cliff Richard, Johnny Ray, Bobby Vinton, Dion, The Cascades, Bobby Vee, Herman’s Hermits, and many more favourites such as “Can’t Help Falling in Love”, “Blue Velvet”, “Teenager in Love”, “Rhythm of the Rain”, “Silhouettes”, and “Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head”.

A huge thank you to Neil for such a wonderful afternoon filled with music, memories, and smiles for our residents during Dementia Awareness Week.

We had some very special visitors at the home today!

Two adorable lambs and a baby goat from Ems Friendly Farm came to spend time with our everyone, bringing plenty of smiles, laughter, and excitement along the way.

Two of our lovely residents even had the chance to feed them – such a heartwarming and special moment to be part of. Experiences like these create wonderful memories and brighten everyone’s day!

A huge thank you to Ems Friendly Farm for bringing the animals in to visit us.
