A system-wide major incident continues to be in place in response to the fire at University Hospital Southampton (UHS) on Sunday morning (1 February).

Our joint efforts focus on providing support to University Hospital Southampton as they respond and recover from the significant impact of the fire.

The wider impact of the fire will affect all partners across Hampshire and Isle of Wight today and into the immediate future. At a time when urgent care needs are typically very high across the country, our system is working together to support UHS, identifying additional capacity, and focusing on the swift discharge of patients who are ready and safe to leave hospital.

We urge everyone to help the health and social care system by following this advice:

- Please only attend your local emergency department (ED) if your condition poses a risk to life or limb. If you’re unsure what service to use visit 111 online or call 111 for advice and the team will get you to the right help.
- Actively support hospital discharge plans when loved ones are ready to return home. Helping patients back to familiar surroundings not only benefits them but also frees up beds for those in urgent need of care.
- Think Pharmacy First for minor illness. Join the tens of thousands of people using their community pharmacy as a source of expert advice and treatment for minor illness. They can also now offer prescription medicine for seven common conditions (where appropriate) without the need to see a GP.
- Urgent Treatment Centres and Minor Injuries Units are available across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight and can help with expert advice and treatment for injuries and illnesses that need urgent medical attention but aren’t life threatening.

For residents who use services at University Hospital Southampton, please visit the trust’s website for the latest updates on the impact on their site and services.

A dementia diagnosis is vital to give people access to the care, treatment and support they desperately need.

But one in three people with dementia are living without one.

That's why we’re turning a spotlight on diagnosis this Dementia Action Week (13 – 19 May).

We need Governments and the NHS to prioritise dementia in policy and decision making, and we want anyone worried about dementia to know how to get a diagnosis.

University Hospital Southampton remains in a major incident today following a fire in the West Wing of Southampton General Hospital on Sunday morning.

When the fire broke out approximately 200 patients were quickly moved to safe areas of the hospital including corridor spaces during the emergency. Following a considerable effort throughout yesterday in repurposing all available space in our hospitals, last night all of those patients were being cared for in beds and on wards. The majority remained in Southampton General Hospital, but some patients were transported to hospitals across the area last night in a coordinated mutual aid response with healthcare partners and supported by South Central Ambulance Service.

The situation has been extremely challenging and we are continuing to work with partners as we continue to prioritise safe patient care.

Our Emergency Department remains closed this morning unless your condition is life or limb threatening.

We have had to cancel a significant amount of planned elective surgery and some outpatient appointments today. All affected patients have been contacted directly. If you have an appointment and have not been contacted, you should attend the hospital as planned today.

Visiting has today resumed as usual – please check visiting hours with the ward.

Did you know there are many different types of dementia?

Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, frontotemporal dementia and dementia with Lewy bodies are four of the most common forms of dementia, and they can all affect people differently.

This is our guide to a few of the most common symptoms for each illness.

Dementia looks different for everyone, so a person’s symptoms may not look exactly as they are described here.

However by knowing the signs, we can make sure that we don’t brush off or ignore some of these lesser-known symptoms, to help everyone with dementia get a crucial early diagnosis.

Save this post for later, and if you’d like more info visit our website or give our Dementia Support Line a call on 0333 150 3456.

Next week is Time to Talk Day, the nation's biggest mental health conversation. A chance to listen, share, and talk about what really matters.

We’ve made great progress in destigmatising mental health problems and improving attitudes, but we need to keep going. There are still times when what we are living through can feel really big and difficult to talk about so this year we’re encouraging people to brave the big talk – and have conversations about mental health experiences that might still feel a bit unspoken.

Hit the link in the comments to find out more about Time to Talk Day 2026.
