There are still so many misconceptions when it comes to sun exposure and skin health.

And I see the effects of them every day in clinic.

Things like:
• “Sunbeds are safer than the sun”
• “A base tan protects your skin”
• “You don’t really need SPF in the UK”

These ideas have been around for years, but they’re simply not true.

The reality is that UV exposure, whether from the sun or sunbeds, plays a major role in:
• premature skin ageing
• pigmentation
• loss of skin quality
• increased risk of skin cancer

A lot of the concerns people want to treat later, could have been prevented earlier.

That’s why I always emphasise prevention first.

Because it’s not just easier, it’s what actually protects your long-term results.

If you’re investing in your skin, daily SPF isn’t a suggestion.
It’s essential.

A good practitioner won’t always tell you what you want to hear.

Because the best results in aesthetics don’t come from doing more, they come from making the right decisions.

That often means:
• Recognising when something isn’t necessary
• Understanding how your lifestyle is impacting your skin
• Prioritising balance and long-term results over quick changes

In many cases, the focus isn’t just on treatment.
It’s on what’s happening outside of the clinic.

Things like sun exposure, stress, skincare habits, and consistency all play a significant role in your results.

And adding more treatment won’t fix what’s being overlooked.

A considered approach is about doing what’s appropriate, not just what’s possible.

Because the best results should always have people saying “you look well”, not “what have you had done?”

One of the most common questions I get is how to “stop” the face fromsagging.

And the honest answer?
It’s not just about treatments.

In most cases, it comes down to the basics that are being overlooked.

Things like:
• Inconsistent skincare routines
• Dehydrated skin
• Skipping SPF
• Lifestyle factors like stress, sleep, and alcohol

These might seem small, but over time they have a significant impact onhow your skin looks and behaves.

Treatments can absolutely enhance your results.
But they work best when the foundation is already there.
If your skin isn’t being looked after day-to-day, no treatment will fullycompensate for that.

The goal isn’t just short-term improvement…it’s long-term, healthy skinthat actually lasts.

The biggest mistake I see?

People chasing trends instead of understanding their own face.

The best results in aesthetics don’t come from doing more, they come from taking a more considered, long-term approach.

From knowing when to treat, when to wait, and when something simply isn’t needed.

The patients who achieve the most natural, balanced results tend to approach things differently:
• They focus on the overall outcome, not just one area
• They don’t feel the need to follow every trend
• They prioritise consistency and patience over quick fixes

Because good results shouldn’t look obvious.

They should look like you, just better.

If you’re constantly chasing what you’ve just seen online, you’ll always feel one step behind your own results.

Concerned that aesthetic treatments might leave you looking overdone or unlike yourself?

For many patients, this is one of the biggest worries before treatment.

When treatments are planned carefully and carried out conservatively, the goal isn’t to change the face. It’s to restore areas where facial support has gradually shifted over time.

Results like this are a good example of what well-planned aesthetic treatment should look like, natural, balanced, and still recognisably you.

The aim is always subtle improvement rather than obvious change.

If you’ve ever wondered what safety checks take place during injectable treatments, there are often small steps involved that patients may not even notice.

One of these steps is called aspiration.

Before injecting dermal filler, the practitioner may gently pull back on the syringe. This allows them to check whether the needle or cannula is positioned within a blood vessel before placing any product.

Because blood vessels run throughout the face, careful technique and a strong understanding of facial anatomy are essential when performing aesthetic treatments.

Aspiration is one of the additional precautions practitioners may use as part of a safe and controlled injection technique, helping to minimise the risk of injecting product into a vessel.

Although it only takes a moment during treatment, it forms part of the careful approach used to prioritise patient safety.

If you’ve ever been tempted to choose an aesthetic treatment purely based on price, it’s worth understanding what can influence those differences.

Costs can vary significantly between clinics, and that difference often reflects several important factors, including the quality of products used, practitioner training and experience, and the level of consultation and treatment planning involved.

High-quality injectable products undergo extensive research and testing to ensure they integrate safely within the skin and produce consistent results.

Equally important is the practitioner performing the treatment. A strong understanding of facial anatomy and ageing patterns is essential for achieving results that look natural and well balanced.

When treatments are performed poorly, correcting them can require dissolving product or additional procedures, which is where patients often find themselves spending more than they would have initially.

Approached correctly, aesthetic medicine should always focus on safety, careful planning and long-term outcomes.

“It’s not filler, and that’s the point.”

If you’ve ever wondered why some treatments focus on restoring the skin itself rather than simply adding volume, the answer often comes down to collagen.

Dermal fillers certainly have an important role. They are hyaluronic acid–based injectables used to replace lost volume where facial fat has gradually declined.

However, another key factor in ageing is the gradual loss of collagen within the skin. As collagen declines, the skin can lose strength, elasticity and structural support.

When this happens, adding filler alone may not create the lift or improvement people are hoping for.

Treatments such as Sculptra, made from poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) — work by stimulating the body’s natural collagen production. Over time, this helps rebuild the skin’s underlying structure and improve firmness and resilience.

For some patients, focusing on improving the strength and quality of the skin first can create a better foundation for future treatments.

If you’re trying to build a skincare routine, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the number of products available.

In reality, consistency and choosing the right products for your skin matter far more than having a long routine.

Morning and evening skincare have slightly different purposes.

Your morning routine focuses on protecting the skin. Antioxidants can help defend against environmental stressors, while daily SPF is essential for protecting the skin from UV damage, one of the main contributors to premature ageing.

Your evening routine focuses more on repair. This is when ingredients such as retinol, exfoliating products and targeted serums can support skin renewal and help address concerns such as pigmentation, texture and overall skin quality.

At the core of both routines should always be gentle cleansing, hydration and barrier support, which help maintain the skin’s overall health and resilience.

A good skincare routine should be tailored to the individual rather than following trends or using products that aren’t suited to the skin’s needs.

If you’re looking into treatments for facial ageing, you may have come across both dermal fillers and Sculptra.

Although they are often mentioned together, they work in very different ways.

Dermal fillers are hyaluronic acid–based injectables that replace lost volume directly. They are commonly used to restore structure in areas where facial fat has gradually reduced, helping to rebalance facial contours.

Sculptra works through a different mechanism. It is an injectable treatment made from poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), which stimulates the body’s natural collagen production.

Over time, this collagen development helps improve the skin’s firmness, support and overall structural integrity, with results appearing gradually rather than immediately.

Understanding whether a concern is primarily caused by volume loss, collagen decline or skin laxity is an important part of treatment planning.

If you’ve ever looked in the mirror and thought, “Something here just doesn’t look quite right,” but weren’t sure exactly what treatment would help, this is very common.

Many people notice changes in the lower face, particularly heaviness around the jawline or lines developing around the mouth.

What many patients don’t realise is that these changes are often linked to loss of support higher in the face, particularly through the mid-face.

As natural volume gradually reduces, the lower face can begin to appear heavier or less defined.

This is why consultation is such an important part of the process.
Rather than focusing only on the area that feels bothersome, I assess the face as a whole, identifying where structural support has changed and how best to restore balance.

A well-planned treatment approach often produces far more natural results than simply treating the most obvious line or fold
