Multigenerational teams are becoming the norm and with more people working later in life and with more ears than ever under daily strain from headsets and headphones, it’s time we asked should hearing health be a standard part of workplace wellbeing?

Hearing health impacts:
❎ Workplace Inclusion & engagement
❎ Mental wellbeing
❎ Collaboration across generations
❎ Communication / productivity

We need to challenge outdated assumptions – hearing problems are not just for older employees or noisy jobs. Our younger employees are at risk too. It really is time to acknowledge that hearing is important for all ages.

What can workplaces do?

We need to:
👂 Offer regular hearing tests like we do with eye tests
👂 Educate on the social and emotional aspects of hearing
👂 Create psychological safe spaces so hearing can be discussed without stigma
👂 Leaders to model by taking action on hearing health

Conversations are needed around ear and hearing health. We need to prioritise proactive care towards hearing health and ensure all generations benefit.

Contact centres are just one example of workplaces we work with. Dave recently contributed to a Contact Centre magazine article discussing the links between hearing health and mental health which is a link often overlooked. When hearing changes there is an increase in communication difficulties, social isolation and stress. What’s interesting though is that this link is not just exclusive to contact centres, it’s prevalent in many workplaces. Have you ever thought about the link between hearing health and mental health?

Ever found yourself thinking:

• “I can’t hear them.”
• “They’re mumbling.”
• “They’re not speaking clearly.”

What if the issue isn’t them but changes in your own hearing?

Miscommunication is an issue within workplaces but surprisingly few people connect communication struggles to changes in our hearing health.

That’s where we come in. Our straightforward, on-site hearing tests provide immediate insights into your hearing levels. Helping you stay sharp, engaged, and in control of every conversation.

This week is mental health awareness week. As an audiologist I have seen the strong link between our hearing health and mental health.

Untreated hearing loss can lead to an increase in stress, fatigue and social isolation. The struggle to hear subtle sounds, missing out on conversations or having to strain at times to listen can take its toll on our mental health.

Research shows those with a hearing loss are twice as likely to have depression, along with an increased risk in having anxiety. With work-related stress, depression and anxiety leading to a loss of 17.1 million work days in the UK, this is something that can no longer be ignored.

Hearing tests need to become a standard part of workplace wellbeing. They allow employees to stay connected, motivated and reassured. By being proactive with regular hearing checks this can allow for timely intervention should a hearing loss be found. Research shows that intervention with hearing aids help to reduce the risk of depression and enable us to stay socially involved which links into the theme of community for this year’s mental health awareness week.

This mental health awareness week we need to have the discussions about our hearing health. Would you consider this for your employees’ workplace wellbeing?

✨ Deaf awareness week 2025 ✨

Deaf Awareness Week is about inclusion, understanding, and breaking down barriers, and that includes in the workplace.

I love the work I do with Workplace Ear Care. Hearing tests at work are so much more than ‘just’ a hearing test. It sparks up a lot of conversation about hearing loss and the difficulties associated with it, whether that be about people they know, or their own personal experience. This is one of my favourite things as it really helps to build inclusivity and accessibility within the workplace, and in society, because talking about our hearing and those who can’t hear really helps to make it a much less avoided subject.

Talking about how we can include and understand those who are deaf or have hearing loss helps towards putting the correct adaptations in place. Adaptations I’ve required due to my own hearing loss include:

✅ Quiet work spaces for meetings to reduce the interruptive background noise which can sometimes take over the important messages within the meeting.

✅ Colleagues coming over to me to talk if they have a question, rather than shouting across to me, or talking with their back to me. Lip reading and visual cues from people’s faces are a big help when it comes to understanding the conversation. Sometimes I get it wrong so please be kind!

✅ Written notes from meetings/plan to allow myself to follow and understand the topics

Workplace hearing tests show employees there is awareness of hearing loss, reducing stigma around hearing loss, and supporting those who may be struggling silently. Regular hearing checks really help to build an inclusive and supportive workplace.

April is Stress Awareness Month – did you know stress can affect your hearing?

Nicola is our Audiologist and Founder of Workplace Ear Care and has seen first hand how overlooked hearing health can be, especially in the quiet workplaces.

Stress has an impact on our hearing and early detection of hearing loss is key to protecting your hearing and overall wellbeing.

How does stress affect your hearing?
✅ Reduced blood flow to the inner ear
✅ Increase in Tinnitus
✅ Increase in hyperacusis – making you become more sensitive to everyday sounds

Managing your stress can help reduce the risk of developing hearing problems and tinnitus. There are many ways we can try to reduce stress:
☑️ Regular exercise – improves your blood circulation which is great for your inner ear
☑️ Relaxation practices like deep breathing – calms the nervous system and reduces cortisol levels
☑️ Good quality sleep – poor sleep affects your ability to manage tinnitus and hearing sensitivity
☑️ Take listening breaks – your ears need regular breaks from headphone use to avoid noise fatigue which can cause unnecessary stress on your ears
☑️ Talk to others whether that be a therapist, employer or friend

If you’re starting to notice changes in your hearing, or just want peace of mind, regular hearing tests with a qualified audiologist are the most accurate way to understand what’s really going on.

An in-person hearing check doesn’t just assess your hearing, it also includes a physical examination of your ears, ensuring nothing is missed. The test is efficient, reliable, and you get immediate feedback.

This is especially important in quiet work environments, where subtle hearing loss might go unnoticed but can still impact communication, focus, and overall wellbeing.

Bringing hearing tests into the workplace makes it easier for everyone to stay on top of their hearing health, and audiologists are the best people for the job!

Did you know hearing health is crucial in all workplaces, not just noisy ones?

Our latest blog explores why employers should prioritise hearing tests, even in typically quieter workplaces, like offices.

We look into the impact of untreated changes to hearing on productivity, mental health, and overall wellbeing. Shockingly, only 6% of UK adults without diagnosed hearing loss had a hearing check in the last year! Let's change that.

Discover how regular hearing tests and proactive ear care can create a more inclusive and productive workplace. Read the full article to learn more!

World Hearing Day is coming up on 3rd March.

The theme/message is chosen by World Health Organization (). This year's theme is: "Changing mindsets: empower yourself to make ear and hearing care a reality for all!"

This tagline really compliments the mission of Workplace Ear Care, and we’re so excited for the awareness this theme will bring. We should all really value our hearing and employers must begin to understand the importance of their employees’ hearing too.

We’re always on the lookout for companies to work with, or shared workspaces to visit and demonstrate the work we do. If you know of any shared work areas where we can showcase the work we do and encourage people to be more aware of their hearing health, please let us know.

What is a hearing loss?

Hearing loss is often thought to only be a problem when we can no longer hear anything around us. However, a hearing loss is more about any changes in our hearing, away from what each of us considers to be our normal standard.

Something not everyone realises is that we can still hear sounds around us, and yet also have a hearing loss at the same time.

There are many different causes of hearing loss, each of which can then affect the types of sound we can no longer hear so well. The most commonly known type of hearing loss is called presbyacusis, often referred to as age-related hearing loss.

With age-related hearing loss, the changes to hearing are subtle and therefore not always known about or realised quickly. A typical change with age-related hearing loss is a gradual loss at our high frequencies (higher pitched sounds). A loss at the high frequencies can result in not hearing clearly, because clarity of speech and the ability to understand words, comes from good high frequency hearing.

If you’re aware of sounds around you, but feel like you’re struggling to understand conversations, this could mean there’s been a change in your hearing.

Any changes to hearing can cause tiredness, stress or forgetfulness, but these symptoms are often dismissed as a part of getting older. The reality is however, that changes in hearing can actually cause these feelings in the first place:
- Tiredness - because we need to use more effort to hear and listen.
- Frustration, because we can’t pick up the conversations and instructions as easily as we feel we should.
- Forgetfulness - because rather than us forgetting the information, what’s happening is that we haven’t heard correctly in the first place.

So what’s the quickest and most effective way of knowing how well we can hear? Having regular hearing tests help us monitor our hearing, and can determine if there are any small changes happening, that otherwise might have gone unnoticed for longer.
