The THORACIC VERTEBRAE are the twelve vertebrae located in the middle section of the human spine, situated between the cervical (neck) and lumbar (lower back) regions. They are characterized by their articulation with the ribs, forming the bony thorax.
FUNCTION:
Protection of Spinal Cord:
The thoracic vertebrae, along with the ribs and sternum, form the thoracic cage, which protects the spinal cord and other vital organs.
Rib Articulation:
They provide attachment points for the ribs, allowing for the movement of the ribcage during breathing.
Movement:
While less mobile than the cervical and lumbar regions, the thoracic spine contributes to flexion, extension, rotation, and side-bending movements of the body.
Support:
They help support the weight of the upper body and provide attachment points for muscles.
Common Symptoms of Thoracic Spinal Pain:
*Persistent Mid-Back Pain.
*Sudden Sharp Mid-Back Pain.
*Stiffness in the Mid-Back Area.
*Radiating Back Pain.
*Numbness, Tingling, and/or Weakness.
