Congratulations to David Strickland, who has been nominated in the Supervisor of the Year category at next month’s Cleaning Excellence Awards 👏

David is employed by our partners Serco and oversees several areas across Southampton General Hospital.

For the past 11 years he’s been making a huge difference—allocating duties, supporting his team on the wards and training staff to keep everything spotless.

“We take pride in ensuring everywhere is clean, we want to give patients the best service possible,” says David

“I was shocked to be nominated. We’ve had thank you cards and emails, but to be nominated for an award is just something different.”

We wish David all the best for the big night.

📢 Today we are asking for your help and support as we launch our Winter Well campaign - with five simple steps YOU can take to protect against seasonal illnesses and help reduce pressure on our services.

Sarah Swanton, who leads our site operations, shares how we can all stay healthy, protect vulnerable patients and ensure hospital care remains available for those who need it most this winter.

🏥 Only attend our Emergency Department (ED) if your condition is urgent.
💉 Get a flu jab as soon as possible if you are eligible.
🤧 Avoid visiting hospital if you are unwell with symptoms of flu, sickness or respiratory illness.
💊 Prepare by keeping basic supplies and remedies at home and if needed seek advice from your GP, pharmacist or NHS 111 to help avoid hospital admission.
🏠 Support discharge plans when loved ones are ready to return home.

We are delighted to be the first place in the UK to recruit a dedicated Alzheimer's Society dementia research nurse.

As part of a £3m investment, Inês Rodrigues will work closely with local hospitals, GPs, memory clinics, and community dementia services to support a diverse range of people into clinical trials so dementia treatments and care can work for everyone.

She said: “Being one of the first ever Alzheimer’s Society UK Dementia Trials Network Research Nurses in the UK is both a privilege and an opportunity to make real change happen.

“I want to ensure dementia research trials are visible and accessible across Southampton and the wider region, regardless of peoples’ background or circumstance. Dementia research has the power to offer hope, connection and progress, and I’m proud to be part of a movement that’s turning that hope into action.”

November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month.

Lung cancer often has no symptoms in its early stages, which means three-quarters of patients are diagnosed too late.

The Lung Cancer Screening Programme helps detect problems earlier, before symptoms appear.

You may be eligible if you are:
• Aged 55 to 74
• A current or former smoker
• Registered with a Southampton or Totton GP

📞 023 8120 8883
📧 LCSops@uhs.nhs.uk

Clive joined the Lung Cancer Screening Programme for a routine follow-up scan. The scan revealed cancer in his lung, caught at an early stage.

“If you get the offer to take part, don’t ignore it. It could save your life,” says Clive.
