I graduated

from the Central School of Speech and Drama (London) in 1994 with a BSc (Hons) in Speech and Language Pathology. With over 22 years of experience, I have worked in a range of locations. I have worked within the NHS and for Charities. I have worked in a variety of settings including mainstream schools and colleges, special schools and colleges, community clinics, and residential homes and people’s own homes. For the last 10 years, I have worked for Autism Hampshire providing Speech and Language Therapy for children, young people and adults. I have worked within a number of Multi-disciplinary teams. I spent a period of time as the Co-ordinator for Bristol Central Community Learning Disablities Team. More recently. I was the Co-ordinator for a Specialist Support Team. My Specialist area is Autism Spectrum Disorders and Learning Disabilities. I spent some time as the Clinical Lead in Autism for Camden and Islington NHS Speech and Language Therapy Services including co-ordination of a working party for SLTs working within the field of ASD. I developed the initial Speech and Language Therapy Service within TreeHouse School. London (where teaching and learning is underpinned by using the principles of Applied Behavioural Analysis, working with ABA supervisors to develop speech, language and communication within ABA programmes). I take speech and language therapy referrals from Southampton and the surrounding area. If you are unsure whether Speech and Language Therapy may be beneficial or would like further information, please contact me for a free initial 15 minute telephone consultation to discuss your/your child’s needs and what I could offer.

AUTISM & EYE CONTACT

For many Autistic people, eye contact can be a highly uncomfortable and even physically painful experience. Whether it's in a Zoom session, classroom activity or social conversation, demanding eye contact can also significantly reduce the processing of what's being said.

It's also very important to note that the ability to make eye contact does *not* preclude someone from being Autistic.

[Image description: Purple background with white text that reads: Autism & Eye Contact. "Eye contact is not necessary for listening or paying attention. Many Autistic people find it easier to listen and process auditory information when we don't have to also process visual information. Forced eye contact for the sake of 'appearing normal' can be challenging, tiring, even painful. We avoid it for a reason. Respect that." ~ Anonymous. To the left are three small images (same image, increasingly zeroed in) of a hand-drawn girl with blonde hair and blue eyes that are looking away. Underneath it reads "Art by Isabella (at age 7)"] Thanks Isabella for letting us use your artwork!
