Recent research by Dr. Pocklington, featured in the Journal of Law & Religion, sheds light on the motivations behind families opting for a direct cremation. The study identifies affordability as a key factor but also emphasises that for many, it’s a matter of “lifestyle choice.”

Dr. Pocklington illustrated this with the story of Andrew and Anne. When Andrew passed away, Anne felt certain that he would want to avoid the "pomp of glass-sided hearses and a ceremony in the crematorium." The couple, who met while studying at university, had enjoyed successful careers in academia before choosing early retirement. Financially comfortable, they had shared a fulfilling life together, filled with friendships and travels.

In addition, recent statistics reveal that 38% of individuals are likely to consider a direct cremation for themselves (NAFD/YouGov Survey), and 21% of all funerals in the UK were direct cremations in 2025 (SunLife Cost of Dying Report 2026). Based on current trends in consumer interest, it’s estimated that:
