Sometimes there are medical reasons that mean we need to get baby out before they decide on their own that it’s time to make an arrival, but I’m talking about the rest of the time. 40 weeks is just an arbitrary date used by medical professionals to guide your medical care. A baby born anywhere between 37-42 weeks is full term and completely normal. In some cases, even beyond 42 weeks. Don’t let anyone tell you your baby is late. They’re not. They’re perfectly on time.

These new findings really highlight the incredible benefits of breastfeeding on a mass scale. Over 1 million years of life could be gained! What a stat! Here’s to hoping we can continue to increase rates by supporting mamas on their breastfeeding journeys.

It is the nature of dependence to foster independence. By letting them rest in our love and tending to their needs, we create secure little beings who don’t fear being away from us because they know that we’ll always be there for them if they need us. Trust your instincts. It’s impossible to love our babies too much.

This is not to say that there can’t be good reasons for induction. Of course, there are. But all too often induction is suggested not from a place of medical necessity but from convenience for the medical professionals. Trust your body, your baby and your instincts. Ask the questions and get the answers. Knowledge is power, mama. Go do your thing. You’ve got this.

We know most of this already, right. I mean skin to skin in the golden hour and, let’s face it, anytime ever, is like a sprinkle of neural magic dust for the body and soul. But some authoritative affirmation and statistical clarification is always welcome.

And yet, home births managed by midwives offer better obstetric and neonatal outcomes for low-risk women than hospital births. (‘Midwife attended planned home births versus planned hospital births in Spain: Maternal and neonatal outcomes’ Lucia Alcaraz-Vidal et al. Midwifery. 2024 Sep).

Fear and trust in all things pregnancy, labour and birth are inextricably linked. If we can learn to trust all that we fear, the birthing world would look so different in such a beautiful way. I really believe that trusting in the process of labour and birth is the key to it all. We just need to get out of the way and let our bodies and our babies work their wonderful magic.
