A few images from the memorial garden today, where I spent some time before leading a funeral service.

It’s a calm and carefully kept space for reflection, and quiet moments.

It was a privilege to celebrate his life today.

Legacy lives in the little things - a favourite mug, a worn sweater, that story everyone remembers.

These details are the tender threads that help a ceremony feel familiar and kind.

Every tells a story.

Today, this man’s story was told with the unmistakable sound and presence of motorbikes, friendships forged over years and the deep affection of his family, especially his nephews.

His final journey in a motorcycle and sidecar hearse was both moving and entirely true to the man he was.

I’m grateful to his family for trusting me to help shape such a personal goodbye and for allowing these photographs to be shared.

There’s no single “right” way to honour a life. When families choose words, tones and moments that feel true - whether reflective, joyful, or gently humorous - the ceremony becomes a gateway to shared presence rather than just a formality.

Studies show that shared rituals - especially ones that feel personal and meaningful - help people feel emotionally supported and grounded during times of change.

It’s less about “formality” and more about connection.

Simple rituals at a - lighting a candle, placing a cherished photo, sharing a moment of silence - can give shape to what’s hard to say.

They connect us with our stories and with each other in calm, meaningful ways.

At the I led today, her family chose to place baskets of Jelly Babies by the chapel exit, inviting each mourner to take a packet as they left and enjoy them later while thinking of her.

It was such a fitting tribute. She had a well-known sweet tooth and a determined streak when it came to her favourite treats; one bag was rarely enough.

Having the Jelly Babies at her felt like a quiet wink to her resilience, her dry sense of humour and the simple pleasures she enjoyed.

It’s the small stories - the laugh shared at a dinner table, the familiar quirk - that often echo longest in people’s hearts.

When these find their way into a ceremony, the whole room softens in recognition.

When I meet with families to plan a funeral, I encourage them to tell the stories that mattered.
