🧠 PINCH ME: A mnemonic to help spot delirium and identify triggers for stress in people living with dementia.
Delirium is a sudden, acute confusional state that can be distressing for both the person experiencing it and those around them. It’s especially common in people living with dementia during end-of-life care, where communication barriers make it harder to identify what’s wrong.
To help carers and families explore possible causes of distress, the British Geriatrics Society introduced the PINCH ME mnemonic:
P – Pain
I – Infection
N – Nutrition
C – Constipation
H – Hydration
M – Medication
E – Environment
Each letter prompts us to consider a potential trigger for sudden changes in behaviour or mood.
At Bupa, we’ve adapted PINCH ME to support dementia care in residential and nursing homes. It’s a reminder to look beyond the surface and do the detective work when someone can’t tell us what’s wrong. As Fran Vandelli, Bupa Dementia Lead explains, β€œThe PINCH ME model can stop us from making unhelpful (or even harmful) assumptions and can remind us to leave no stone unturned”
Let’s raise awareness this and empower carers with tools that make a difference. πŸ’™

We had a cheerful afternoon being entertained by Jason Allen 😊. Singing good tunes from the 1950s and 1960s he tapped into a happy period of songs and memories for the residents who smiled, danced and sang throughout. From β€˜Bring me sunshine’ to β€˜Daydream Believer’, Jason certainly touched the hearts of our residents πŸ₯°

Residents attended a session of film clips from their favourite musicals, choosing, singing along to and appreciating songs from glorious films from the 1940s and 1950s. It could be said that the quality of song writing was masterful then, and as for the execution… hats off to Doris Day, Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe πŸ’ƒπŸΌπŸ‘¨β€πŸŒΎπŸŒ‚πŸ₯‚ An enjoyable afternoon πŸ€—

Residents and staff once again enjoyed a highly sociable evening at the Dog and Duck, a pop-up pub set up by staff on the Nightingale floor. Good cheer, dancing and catching up with friends from both floors over a refreshment πŸ»πŸ§ƒ or two was the order of the evening and everyone said what a good time they had had.

Thank you to AK, Sheila, Lizzie, Shaiann who set up the bar on their night off and to all the staff who supported this event. πŸ€—

Residents, families and friends attended our third Annual Dog Show πŸ• on bank holiday Monday. A huge thanks to our residents’ family members who brought Willow, Walter, Marley, Jumble, Dotty, Maisie and late entrant Ziggy. Everyone entered their dogs into each category and the dogs were so good that it was hard to choose a clear winner for each one. Thank goodness for our resident judges πŸ₯‰πŸ†πŸ€—

A wonderful afternoon 😊

Sleep is as important for our health as our diets and exercise, yet we often cut it short.

Follow these 5 tips to get the most out of it:
1. Whilst the length of sleep is important (aim for 7-9 hrs a night) but quality of sleep is important too. Improve sleep quality by removing distractions from your bedroom, avoiding caffeine late in the day.
2. Sleep consistency is important - going to bed and waking up at the same time each day (even on weekends or kids’ holidays) can improve how restorative your sleep is. Keep lie-ins less than 1 hour.
3. Stop snoozing! Each time you fall back to sleep, you initiate a new sleep cycle which takes 90 mins to complete, so breaking it by another alarm 10 mins later is added stress on your body
4. Keep your bedroom cool - your body needs to drop its temperature to initiate and maintain sleep
5. Screen time before bed has similar effects to drinking coffee on the brain. Avoid screens and blue light in the hour before sleep.

This year I’ve partnered with Bupa to bring you evidence based health information, that you can trust - for more sleep tips, check out Bupa’s website and the Bupa Health YouTube channel!

It Carnival time!
Friday was full on carnival πŸŽͺ fun from the various games, to the Elvis tribute act, to the ice cream truck, right to the BBQ our lovely chefs made. It was a jammed packed day full of fun, residents enjoyed the bean bag toss, hook the duck and of course the ring toss. To help stay cool during the fun games, ice cream 🍦 was there for those who wanted some and hydration station provided all through the building. To finish what is already a fantastic day, staff and residents got up dancing to some 50s, 60s classics sung by Elvis Scott.

We welcomed Cieron Faux aka Not King Cole back to Fountains Lodge this week. There were plenty of classics being sung from the likes of Frank Sinatra through to Neil Diamond πŸ’Ž. Some of our residents enjoyed a good singsong 🎀, with others taking to the dance floor πŸ•Ί. Many had fond memories of hearing these many classics on the radio πŸ“» or at the local dance hall. One had said they would like Cieron to come and perform again.

29/07/2025

Here at Fountains Lodge, we are calling out to our friends, relatives and the local community to donate bottles of SPF 50 suncream for a charity called White Angels. Our very own care assistant, Sussygold set up the charity in 2018 to help children and their families in her home country of Nigeria who are suffering the same challenges she faced growing up with albinism.

Albinism is an inherited condition that affects the production of melanin, the pigment that colours the skin, hair and eyes. People with the condition are at higher risk of skin cancer when exposed to UV and experience other disadvantages. This is why the foundation, run independently by Sussygold, provides children with albinism SPF 50 and above suncream, medical appointments, education, and other support.

If you would like to donate a bottle of SPF 50 suncream to White Angles Foundation, please send it to Fountains Lodge Bupa Care Home, 13 – 17 London Road, Southborough, Royal Tunbridge Wells, Kent TN4 0RJ, or drop it off in the box provided in the reception area. Thank you
