Law Commission Publishes Proposed Reforms to Burial and Cremation laws
On 18th March the Law Commission published the above report which you can read in full on this link: https://lawcom.gov.uk/publication/burial-and-cremation-final-report/
The report includes research on direct cremation and everyone in the industry will be pleased to see that it includes the following proposal for transparency for Direct Cremation:
βThe Law Commission's proposal: To address risks associated with the rapid rise of direct cremation, the Commission recommends that operators be required to inform those arranging the funeral exactly where and when it will happen, or confirm when and where it happened if that information is not available at the time of arrangement.β
SAIF has responded to this with the following statement:
βWhile we welcome steps towards greater transparency, we believe these recommendations must go further to protect consumers from the opaque nature of national online models. SAIF is calling for a mandatory requirement that all direct cremation providers disclose the full chain of third-party contractors involved in their infrastructure. Families deserve to know exactly who is handling their loved one, including the specific logistics used for transportation. Without this granular transparency, families remain in the dark regarding the standard of care their relative receives.β
It remains to be seen how far the transparency will go but at least it is encouraging that it is in the report.
