Brachycephalic Breeds (Flat Faced Breeds)

Breeds such as Pugs, Boston Terriers, and Bulldogs are classed as Brachycephalic Breeds because of their short muzzle / flat face.

1 - These breeds can suffer from Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS).

If you notice their snoring / breahting getting worse then this could indicate the structural problems restricting air flow.

Signs that your dogs may show if they are struggling with BOAS or respiratory distress are: sleeping upright to keep airways open, avoiding exercise, or fainting when excited or hot.

2 - If possible, you should try to roll the dog onto their back during CPR, this will allow for more effective compressions. Ensure that the neck is extended and the airways are clear.

3 - Monitor for sign of overheating / heatstroke. Make sure they have access to fresh water and a cool place to lay down. Do not use freezing cold water to cool an overheating dog, they could go into shock - cool them slowly with the use of fans, shade and luke warm / cool water.

🚨 Alabama Rot (aka CRGV) Alert for Dog Parents! 🚨

This rare but deadly disease (often called Alabama Foot Rot) strikes out of nowhere, mostly after walks in wet, muddy, or woodland areas. 😔

It starts with painful sores, lesions, or red patches on paws, lower legs, belly, chest, tongue, or around the mouth.

These cause blood clots in skin & kidney vessels → kidney failure can hit in as little as 1-10 days. 💔

Most cases are fatal, but early vet attention massively boosts survival chances!

Prevention tips that could save your pup:
- 🐾 Always wash or wipe down paws, legs, & lower body after damp/muddy walks (especially woodlands!)
- 🌧️ Stay extra vigilant in cooler, wet months
- If you spot ANY unexplained skin changes post-walk → straight to the vet, no waiting! Time is critical.

Our fur babies deserve every chance. Share this to spread awareness—better safe than sorry! 🐶❤️

Why does my dog think she’s a lawnmower?

There are a few reasons why your dog might be eating grass - although there is no definitive answer.

It could be because:
- It’s fun (texture and taste)
- Extra fibre (for better digestion)
- Mild stomach upset
- Boredom / Attention Seeking

Overall eating grass is not bad for dogs, it’s pretty normal. But, if it’s excessive and followed by symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhoea, or lethargy then contact your vet for advice.

Keep your pet safe during their autumn/winter walks.

Use light-up and reflective collars and tags - these help to make your dog or cat more visible to drivers.

Wipe their paws after they have been out as grit, salt and antifreeze are used to keep the pavements and roads from becoming slippery.

Grit, salt and antifreeze can be irritating to paw pads. This can cause dogs and cats to lick their paws, ingesting the substance.

Look out for symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhoea and dehydration. Contact your vet immediately if you suspect your pet has come into contact with, or ingested any of these substances.

🍄 Wild Mushrooms 🍄

See if you can spot the mushrooms in the 2nd
photo, close up on last slide ➡️

Wild mushrooms can be very toxic to both humans and our pets.
They thrive in dark, damp environments, particularly during the autumn season.

Make sure to keep an eye out for mushrooms in your garden and when out walking your dog as they can be very small and blend into the ground, especially in woodland and leafy areas.

If you suspect your pet has ingested wild mushrooms then contact your vet immediately.

Signs to look out for:
- vomiting and diarrhoea
- lethargy
- abdominal pain / cramps
- seizures / tremors
- uncoordinated movements (wobbling, stumbling)
- breathing difficulties
- collapse
