Part Two - Pet First Aid Prevention

Under the Control of Dogs Order 1992, all dogs must wear an identification tag in public spaces. The tag should include the name and address of the owner, but the pet’s name should be avoided for safety.

All puppies must be microchipped by 8 weeks of age. Make sure all details are up-to-date when the ownership is transferred, or if there has been a change in any of the details such as address, phone number.

All kittens must be microchipped by 20 weeks of age. All information must be kept up-to-date. It is also recommended to have an ID collar on cats, however this is not mandatory.

Welcome to our Pet First Aid Prevention series.

Many common pet accidents are preventable with the right precautions. That’s why we have put together these hopeful tips to keep your pets safe.

Prevention is always better than cure!

Tip One - Pet-Proofing Your Home:
Whether you’re bringing home a new puppy or kitten, or have an adult dog, ensuring your home is safe is so important.

Animals like to explore with their mouths and noses and this can sometimes get them into a bit of trouble (choking risks).

Here is checklist of some of the things you can do to pet-proof your home:
- Tidy away small objects
- Get a cable tidy for any loose wires
- Make sure all medications are stored high up in a secure cupboard
- Fit screens to opening windows
- All chemicals are stored away
- Remove toxic plants
- Check all perimeters of your garden are secure, with no gaps to escape through
- Check for splinting wood, nails or screws in fencing
- You may want to remove or fence off areas with small stones

Brachycephalic Breeds (Flat Faced Breeds)

Breeds such as Pugs, Boston Terriers, and Bulldogs are classed as Brachycephalic Breeds because of their short muzzle / flat face.

1 - These breeds can suffer from Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS).

If you notice their snoring / breahting getting worse then this could indicate the structural problems restricting air flow.

Signs that your dogs may show if they are struggling with BOAS or respiratory distress are: sleeping upright to keep airways open, avoiding exercise, or fainting when excited or hot.

2 - If possible, you should try to roll the dog onto their back during CPR, this will allow for more effective compressions. Ensure that the neck is extended and the airways are clear.

3 - Monitor for sign of overheating / heatstroke. Make sure they have access to fresh water and a cool place to lay down. Do not use freezing cold water to cool an overheating dog, they could go into shock - cool them slowly with the use of fans, shade and luke warm / cool water.
