CONGRATULATIONS, You have reached your destination!

Most people I work with are EXACTLY at the destination they SHOULD be.

But NOT where they want to be!

You see our lives will go wherever we focus most of our attention, it's like setting our own SatNav.

And if we focus on anxiety that’s EXACTLY what will appear in our lives.

People I see regularly for anxiety are continually focussed on what has gone WRONG in their lives, where injustices happened, they were overlooked for promotions, lovers were lost, opportunities missed.

I tell my clients you could walk down the street and stop every person you passed and ask them if anything bad had ever happened to them.

How many people do you think you would find who had never had a loss, disappointment, or trauma?

The DIFFERENCE is they aren't continually THINKING about it.

Your brain will focus on what YOU are thinking about.

You have got into the habit of focussing on what you DON'T want.

If you are struggling with ANXIETY & want your destination to be CALM, CONFIDENT & HAPPY.

Point your internal SatNav there instead and see what an amazing difference it makes to your WHOLE life.

I don’t know about you, but I’ve struggled a bit this week, a lot of us do in January.

Once all the mayhem of Christmas and New Year has passed and we are back to our normal routines everything can feel a bit flat.

On top of that the news is always full of doom and gloom and it can all feel a bit overwhelming and depressing.

And that’s where we need to remain focussed on how we WANT to feel.

We CAN control that.

And NOT focus on what is happening around us, that we can’t control.

Where our focus goes, our energy flows.

So, I’ve focussed this week on what I CAN do to lift my mood.

To take control of MY OWN happiness

So, I’ve been wrapping up and doing some lovely dog walks alone and with friends.

Met friends for coffee.

Lighting candles and putting fairy lights on to brighten the house.

And I’ve started a lovely book, instead of trawling mindlessly through Facebook.

And I’ve cosied up in the evenings watching films…what did we do before Netflix!!

And late to the table, I’ve finally dipped my toe into Traitors for the first time!

It’s great, isn’t it? I didn’t realise what I’ve been missing I’m loving the psychology of it all and the theories people make up that are all totally wrong 😂

Whatever you enjoy doing, make time to do it this month and see how quickly YOUR mood will lift too.

I started to be free when I discovered that the cage was made of my own thoughts.

Thought provoking, isn’t it?

How much do your thoughts keep you imprisoned?

Not experiencing all the beauty that life has to offer?

Because you are running stories in your mind that keep you trapped?

“I can’t”
“I don’t”
“I won’t”
“I’m not that kind of person”
“That’s not me”
“I couldn’t possibly”

How many experiences do you talk yourself out of because you have beliefs about what you are capable of, who you are?

How long are you going to restrict your life before you do something about it?

We are heading to the end of the year when we all start to think about the good and not so good things that have happened this year.

And the year we would like to have next year.

What if you were to change one thought about yourself?
Do one thing you are scared to do but really want to?
Make one decision that will free you from that cage?

Would you?
Could you?

If not, why not?

And as always if you need a little help, someone unbiased to talk things through with, motivating you through, you know where to come.

Every heard of Kintsugi?

It's the Japanese art that means 'joining gold'.

Broken objects are repaired using gold, often making them more beautiful than before they were broken.

And this is true of us.

We can often think that life events and traumas have ruined our lives but often the opposite is the case.

Kintsugi, reminds us that over time, we can heal from our wounds and become stronger and more beautiful.

So if you are feeling fragile and struggling with events from your childhood or traumas from, work, relationships or just life!

Don't stay broken!

Find a way to repair yourself and heal either with therapy, talking with friends or taking time out to enjoy something that makes you feel happy.

What we see depends mainly on what we look for.

Have you ever wondered why some people always seem to be happy and always seeing the good in everything?

While others are sad or low and can always find something negative most of the time.

It all stems from their upbringing and background and more importantly how they processed it within their mind.

2 people can go through the exact same situation and yet see it in a completely different way.

And a lot of this depends on what they looked for going into it.

If they expect to succeed at something, enjoy something, or overcome something they will.

If they expect to fail or not enjoy something, they will experience exactly that.

As Henry Ford once said, “Whether you think you can or think you can’t you’re right.”

So, what can you do to change if you are planting weeds instead of flowers?

The first thing as always is to notice that you are one of those people!

This may sound obvious, but it isn’t always especially if you come from a family who are, negative and you don’t know how to be any different.

The second is to notice when you are being negative or expecting to fail.

Ask yourself, is there any evidence to back it up?
Are you the only one looking at it that way?
Is there a more positive way you can look at it?

And see how you can view it differently.
In a way that makes your whole experience of the situation easier in some way.

Start with something small and build up as you get better at it.

Before you know it, you will be experiencing life in a more positive, happy way.

Makes you think, doesn’t it?

Have you ever noticed that you become a different person depending on who you are with at the time?

Thinking and behaving in ways to fit in and not make waves.

But the thing is.

The more we try to become what we think we SHOULD be

The more we become removed from who we WANT to be.

Or were MEANT to be.

A lot of women I work with for anxiety have become stuck in this pattern.

They are so busy being the best mum, wife, partner, daughter, employee

That they have LOST themselves in the middle somewhere

They often say, “I don’t know who I am anymore.”

Or “I don’t recognise myself anymore.”

And that’s because they are being what they THINK everyone else wants them to be

Not who THEY want to be.

Or were MEANT to be.

So as this lovely meme says

“Maybe the journey isn’t so much about BECOMING anything

Maybe it’s about UN-BECOMING everything that isn’t really you, so you can be who you were meant to be in the first place.”

So, grab yourself 2 minutes today and ask yourself…. What can you un-become that no longer serves you?

If it ever did!

My heart sinks when I hear these words from potential clients…

“I’m not in the right head space at the moment”
“I will come and see you when I’m feeling a bit better”
“I don’t feel strong enough for therapy, I will book in when I am”

But why is this?

Why do people think they will feel worse with therapy?

Most people think they will have to churn over events from their past and they just don’t feel up to doing it.

But therapy doesn’t have to be that way.

What if I was to tell you that you can start to feel much better after just one session?

Would you give it a go then?

Therapy with me is about moving you forward not focussing on why you don’t feel great now.

Not all therapies are the same
Not all therapists are the same

If you are like I WAS

The more you let ANXIETY rule your life…

The SMALLER your world becomes.

It CREEPS up on you

WITHOUT you realising it

At first it is just one or two things that you know are going to cause you anxiety, so you start to AVOID doing them.

You EVEN tell yourself you didn’t really like doing them that much anyway and it’s no big deal.

BUT then a couple more things get ADDED in.

You start letting people down at the last minute because you have got yourself in a state and had a PANIC attack.

Or you turn so many invitations down people STOP inviting you out.

Instead of making you feel BETTER, it makes you feel much WORSE as you now have GUILT & SHAME added into the mix too.

And what’s more it makes the next time you go out even harder as even a trip to the supermarket or hairdresser can seem like a much BIGGER deal now

If this isn’t resolved, your world becomes SMALLER & SMALLER until eventually you are scared of EVERYTHING & EVERYONE.

BUT…Here’s the thing, you WEREN’T born with anxiety

You have LEARNT how to be anxious and you’re probably pretty good at it!

So, what you learn can be unlearned.

If you want to UNLEARN how to be anxious and LEARN how to be CALM & CONFIDENT instead.

Although I say I work with anxiety, I’m kind of lying.

When a new client sits in front of me saying how bad their anxiety is, I’m not thinking of how to help them manage their anxiety.

I’m thinking what’s causing it? why’s it there?

As we say in therapy… “the issue is never the issue.”

My clients come to see me because they think they have anxiety… they don’t.

They have a bereavement they haven’t dealt with.

An overwhelm of responsibilities they are struggling with…
• work schedules
• school runs
• deadlines
• families to cook and clean for
• family disputes
• elderly parents needing extra help

Trauma in the past they were still carrying

Or in the case of this client, a dispute which was causing sleepless nights, not enjoying life, overthinking, over analysing and dreading going home *

So, in 3 sessions we cleared out some old 💩reframed some issues, so the client saw them differently and voila! 😃

They didn’t need me anymore!
