It can be hard to recognise when we’re not feeling at our best emotionally and sometimes even harder to articulate that and therefore find ways to self support.

For children this can be even more of a challenge, so here’s some simple ideas to help your child through tricky times.

1. Calm jar
All you need is a jar with a lid - fill with warm water, washing up liquid or oil and add some glitter and maybe food colouring. Secure the lid and give the jar a shake…the glitter represents your thoughts and emotions. As the glitter settles and you sit still, notice your breath and your thoughts settling down, too.

2. Stress balls
Pressing, pulling, pushing and twisting dough can be a great stress reliever for you and your little one.
Here’s a simple no cook, no salt ‘Play Dough’ recipe for you to try.
All you need is 3 cups flour, 1 cup cold water and 1 tablespoon oil.
Mix it all together, and there you have it!

3. Self soothe box
Why not make a self soothe box with your little one?
All you need is a box or container, and a range of sensory things to pop inside that will focus their minds.
Include the following:
✨Something to touch (something soft, cuddly, with a comforting texture)
✨Something to look at (photos of special people/things/pets)
✨Something that the child likes to smell i.e. favourite soap
✨Something to hear (a wind-up toy or something with a comforting sound)

The new school term is well and truly underway and hopefully your children are settling into it and enjoying school-life.

But they may have some worries and concerns about school that they’re not able to communicate at this stage; perhaps they’re finding a particular subject challenging, or they haven’t quite gelled with their new teacher. Or maybe they’re having friendship problems.

Try the following tips to help your child feel safe and comfortable and able to open up to you:

⭐️ Spend time with them
Do this every day, even if it's just a few minutes. Do things together that you both enjoy. Go for a walk, cook, eat, play — or just hang out. Find ways to smile and laugh together. This keeps the bond between you strong and positive. And it creates moments for kids to open up naturally.

⭐️ Listen with patience
When kids and teens want to talk, listen with your full attention. Give them time to put their thoughts and feelings into words. Ask questions to hear more. Don't be too quick to give advice. Let them confide. Listen calmly to what they have to say.

⭐️ Validate
Let kids know you understand. Say it’s okay to feel how they feel. Tell them their feelings are normal. Try not to say, "There's nothing to worry about." This can make kids think they shouldn't feel the way they do. Instead, listen calmly and accept how they feel. That makes it easier for kids to share.

⭐️ Help kids think of how to handle things
Help them feel capable. Don't jump in to solve things for them. Instead, invite kids and teens to think of what they can do. Support their good ideas. Talk it through together. Remind them of times they tried something new and it went well. Offer to help as needed.

The vestibular sense contributes to our ability to maintain balance and body posture.

It has a major impact on our physical, emotional, and learning needs. In fact, it is the first sensory system to develop in the womb. When the foetus is only 5 months old its vestibular system is amazingly well developed.

A typically responsive vestibular system enables a child to feel secure and confident in their body, so they can move, attend to learn, and rest.

We stimulate this sense when we move our head, so any activity involving rocking, jumping, spinning, or being upside down, can have up to a 6-8 hour effect on the brain.

One of our favourite yoga poses to stimulate the vestibular sense is the downwards dog pose!

We use unique music and objects created by us to stimulate children's sight, sound, and touch senses.

This provides a truly one-of-a-kind multi-sensory experience unlike any other programme!

We have perfected our sessions so that the children are not left over or under-stimulated, and leave having been able to jump, dance, giggle, and finally... relax!!

Welcome to the first week of classes this term! We can't wait to get back into lessons with you all, whether that's in nurseries, schools, or private classes - we've missed you!

This week's Pose of the Week is Tree. 🌳

This pose is great for practising balance and improving focus. A good sense of balance will help children in all areas of life, such as helping them to sit in their chairs more easily, improve their running, and improve their handwriting and drawing skills.

Even before the COVID-19 crisis, one in six young people aged 5-16-years old had a mental health disorder. This , we are focused on helping young people , and move beyond the struggles of the past year.

Here at Children Inspired by Yoga, we equip young people with tools and techniques to help regulate emotions and reduce stress & anxiety. That, alongside our story-based, music-oriented classes, provides a great environment for young people to let go and allow their imagination & creativity to take over.

We currently help support schools and nurseries deliver their recovery curriculum to help young people recover from the past year’s obstacles. Find out more at www.childreninspiredbyyoga.com
