I quit smoking for Stoptober 2013. I raised a nice bit of cash for Target Ovarian - in fact, I raised £1200 - which meant I felt a bit too embarrassed to start smoking again so just stayed quit 😍

At £10 a pack and 20 cigs a day - that’s about £36,520 not spent.

In reality - it’s £14 a pack now. £51,128 - and I was on around 25-30 a day by the time I quit.

If anyone spots that swag of cash - I seem to have misplaced it so please let me know 😂

How to support a friend during Go Sober October

Arrange a social where alcohol isn’t normally a thing - bowling, walk, cinema….
Don’t make them feel like the dull friend who doesn’t drink and is stuck on lime and soda
Don’t arrange a huge p**s up for 1st November
Sponsor them if they are doing it for charity
Forward details of sober events
If a work colleague is doing it and alcohol is part of the work culture, find a way to help them stay sober.
Be interested and ask how it is going. Encourage them.
Find podcasts or links to the sober community
Be a friend.

And here is why ….
You have no idea who is battling a drink issue. Some people have never done a block of time without a drink and the idea of a month is a huge challenge. It’s been years for some people. Some people are doing it because they recognise alcohol is an issue and being part of a crowd is helpful for motivation. Some people have been seeing a counsellor about their drinking. Some people are absolutely desperate to quit and need to quit. Some people are on their last chance before they hit a proverbial brick wall.

Be a mate. Be supportive. Ask if everything is ok. Be there.

(If your body has become used to high levels of daily alcohol, then stopping suddenly can be dangerous. Seek medical advice or ring drink line for anonymous advice).

Day 1 and 2 of Dry January 2022!!
wisdom!!
Going dry for this month doesn't mean you just need to play taxi driver to everyone and sit with your lime and soda.
Take control. Get your diary (or google calendar) and start booking some fun stuff in. Give yourself something to enjoy this month.
You will also notice that mornings start so much easier! No hangover - energy from sleeping better. So book some stuff for the mornings as well - maybe a brunch and newspapers somewhere?!

My tip for is about building in decisional delays! That moment when you think - ooh I'll just have a drink, or was a silly idea anyway, or its a bank holiday weekend - everyone has a drink!
Notice yourself have the thought - and then STOP!
Do something else for 15 minutes - the thought will peak in strength and then go away! Do a puzzle, drink some ice cold water, clean your teeth, go for a walk, google holiday images from your favourite destination....
It is Day 2.... you have got this!!
