Our πŸΆπŸ• Pets as Therapy πŸΆπŸ• pooches routinely visit the Down Hall to provide our residents with companionship, joy, and nostalgic memories of their own furry friends.

For πŸ’š Mental Health Awareness Week πŸ’š we are sharing some of the practical steps we take to support the well-being of our residents here at Down Hall Residential Care Home!

Animal-assisted therapy has a very calming effect on our residents, especially those living with dementia who can feel anxious at times.

The visits bring back fond memories of childhood pets and can be an important link to their past. The familiar feel of stroking a dog’s fur can unlock memories and bring clarity and happiness.

Who else finds their furry friends help their mental health? Tell us about them in the comments πŸ‘‡

🎡 "Thank you for being a friend..." 🎡

Having good relationships with others can help you feel like you belong, allow you to share experiences, and receive emotional support. It's just one of the reasons why our residents feel part of a family here at Down Hall.

Living alone, especially for older people, can be very isolating and can affect your mental health and well-being. It's also why we organise events that include members of the local community, such as our knit & natter sessions that are open to all.

Here are a few of our residents relaxing and enjoying each other's company over a game of dominoes.

Picking up creative activities, such as knitting, crafting or flower arranging, can help ease stress and anxiety by letting you take a step back and relax. They are also really positive ways to express yourself, build emotional resilience and boost mental health.

Here are a few of our residents getting creative with some spring blooms 🌷🌹🌷 and making these beautiful flower arrangements πŸ’

One of the most important things we can do to help protect our mental health is regular movement. Our bodies and our minds are connected 🧠πŸ’ͺ

πŸ’₯ Exercise can boost our mood and increase mental alertness and energy
πŸ’₯ Movement helps us feel better about our bodies and improve self-esteem
πŸ’₯ It can help reduce stress and anxiety and help us to sleep better

Here are Adrian, Sylvia and Squibbs doing some stretches with the bands, and Doreen and Joan getting moving with the ribbons.
