Another fabulous Friday at today.
We worked on various types of movements today, including focusing on the tricky skill of crossing the midline. For anyone who doesn't know, the midline is the imaginary line from your head vertically down your body separating the left side of your body from your right. As children, we don't inherently realise that we can reach from one side of the body and cross the midline to reach over to the other side, e.g touching your right arm to your left knee. This is something we have to learn and master.
Why is this difficult? You have to use both sides of your brain in order to do this (as the right hemisphere controls the left side of the body and the left hemisphere controls the right side of your body).
Why is it important? Using both sides of the body (and brain) is important for bilateral coordination, which is crucial for so many things - from daily tasks like getting dressed and eating, to writing, playing games, participating in sports and so much more.
Another key thing we did today was leading and following. We played follow the leader in nursery and the children all copied the various movements. A couple of the children even took turns to suggest some movements for us to copy, which was wonderful to see them taking on the leader roles.
It was also great to see some of the children in reception and year 1 giving ideas and demonstrating different warm up movements for the rest of the class to follow - showing knowledge, confidence and leadership. We also played a game where the children paired up and one was the leader who moved around and the other was the follower pretending to be the leader's reflection in the mirror. I observed some creative movement ideas as well as some very careful copying.
Well done, children!
