Forget sick leave — GPs in the UK may soon stop writing fit notes! Instead, they’ll be prescribing gym memberships and job coaches. Now I’m all for the gym…as someone who serviced the leisure sector my whole career and attends one 5 days a week I’m a massive fan BUT….is this really the answer?
Most employees off work with anxiety, burnout, or chronic pain aren’t lacking motivation — they’re absolutely depleted.
From stress.
From poor sleep.
From inadequate nutrition.
From working in environments that ignore the fundamentals of human health.
You don’t fix that with a gym pass alone.
You prevent it with a proactive approach to wellbeing — one that supports people before they reach breaking point.
I think what is missing from this new strategy is…
1. Lifestyle medicine — not just fitness, but food as fuel for mental health
2. Sleep support — because exhaustion isn’t laziness
3. Early intervention — personalised health & lifestyle coaching and holistic care that prevents decline
4 Cultures of care — workplaces that don’t just react to sickness, but actively protect health
The real crisis isn’t the number of sick notes.
It’s the number of people who feel like they’re only allowed to ask for help once they’re already unwell.
It’s time to shift from crisis response to genuine prevention.
