Barts Hospital is a remarkable institution with its history dating back to 1123. Longevity alone has led to an outstanding collection of archival material, and continuous usage and adaptation to the preservation of historical architectural gem, notably the church of St. Bartholomew's the Less, and the 18th century James Gibbs hospital buildings with their great works of art. These have all survived as an integral part of a modern hospital providing the highest quality of care with all the latest scientific and medical equipment and technology. Heritage and modern medicine are not always easy bedfellows, and it is no surprise that the provision of healthcare for today's patients is bound to take priority over expenditure and time spent on art and heritage treasures.

'Barts and the Olympics'
Wednesday 26 May 2021 at 1900 hrs

With the delayed Tokyo Olympics just weeks away GB international rower Jack Beaumont joins us to help spotlight some previous Barts medallists. Jack’s grandparents were a Barts nurse and a Barts doctor and he is currently captain of the world-famous Leander Club, in Henley.

In conversation with Olympic commentator Robert Treharne Jones, Jack will look back on Barts surgeon Raymond Etherington-Smith, a member of the GB gold medal eight in 1908; eye surgeon HB Stallard, who won a bronze medal in 1500m at the 1924 ‘Chariots of Fire’ Games; and Arthur Wint, the Jamaican athlete who won gold over 400m at two successive Olympics during his student career at Barts.
