TAPER TIPS for London marathon runners!

- Take it easy, the weeks of ramping up miles are done, it’s time to reduce the load now. It feels scary to pull back on the mileage when you need to run marathon distance next weekend, but your body needs it. You’ve done the hard work now, marathon day is your victory lap 🥳
- Nothing new between now and marathon day! Now isn’t the time for experimental yoga sessions, trialling a new energy gel your friend recommends, switching your trainers in a last minute panic or buying any new kit for race day.
- Sports massages / Osteo appointments etc, no later than Wednesday next week. Give your body time between a treatment and race day!!
- Fuel - consider your diet in the build up to the marathon and think through your food and running fuel for race day.
- Relax! Maranoia is a thing. You’ve put so much hard work into training for this moment, it’s natural that you’re afraid of something getting between you and that finish line. You’ve got this far, trust yourself and the process and try to relax.

Any tips for first time marathon runners in their taper? Add them below! 👇👇

MARATHON TRAINING?

Delaying seeing someone for a ni**le or injury will mean you’ll be fighting a losing battle as you continue to build volume/ distance. 🚨🚨 New review 🚨🚨 “Felix is just great, he listened to my history and concerns and has consistently made a massive impact to my mobility and pain from day 1. It’s incredible what a difference can be made with a few sessions, I’m now able to move free-er than I have for years. Can’t recommend Felix enough!”

Top tips for looking after your lower back as you are starting the new year with new strength goals, training plans or simply picking up where you left off!

Build up intensity steadily, managing training load appropriately is key

Prioritise hip and mid back mobility to keep the lower back happy, it’s tempting to stretch the lower back if it’s a vulnerable spot for you but truthfully there is more to be gained by keeping these other areas mobile

Watch your technique - if you’re on your own then slowing down an exercise to focus on quality of movement and control can be really helpful, as is videoing or doing exercises in front of the mirror. Personal trainers, in person Pilates and yoga, one to one attention can really help keep you accountable and self aware

Dealing with aches and pains quickly when they do arise - there’s a period of adjustment when you try something new for the body, and some minor aches and pains are to be expected, but more than that, book to see an osteopath so that it’s a minor bump in the road rather than a total obstacle to your goals!

Knee pain?? Did you know that osteopaths work with knee joint problems all the time? Ligament sprains, meniscal pain, patellofemoral joint pain (runners knee), ITB syndrome, osteoarthritis - diagnosis, targeted treatment and exercise rehab typically resolves most knee pain, especially if you deal with pains earlier rather than later.

Injuries don’t have to stop you from doing what you love or out a pin in any sports goals you have upcoming. Book in with one of the team so we can help 🙋‍♀️🙋
