St John Ambulance: Saving Lives, Thanks to You

St John Ambulance is the nation’s leading first aid organisation, providing vital care and training when it matters most. But what many people may not realise is that every aspect of our life-saving work relies on voluntary donations. We receive no government funding, we exist thanks to the kindness and generosity of people like you.

That is why we are reaching out to local businesses and premises. Hosting a charity collection tub is one of the easiest and most effective ways you can support us. Simply placing one on your counter or reception desk gives your customers and visitors a simple opportunity to give what they can, helping us to purchase equipment, train volunteers, and keep our communities safe.

If you would like to have a collection tub at your shop or business, or if you know someone else who might be happy to help, please get in touch. We will deliver everything you need right to your door.

Every penny counts, and with your help, we can continue to be there for anyone who needs us.

📣 UPDATE ANNOUNCEMENT:
Just off the back about a comment about training we’d just like to remind everyone this is a community defibrillator (AED) which means it’s for everyone, & anyone or everyone can get trained if they feel the need. Here’s a starter for 10…of course AED vary in design but the procedure is standard

Our community defibrillator arrives at The Welly 🫀❤️
We’ve invested in a life-saving defibrillator for our customers & community. Located externally on the pub, on the right hand return wall (by the bike racks & tree). The defrib is accessible 24/7 for anyone, aged 1yrs old & upward, that is in a cardiac arrest emergency. No medical training needed as the machine will talk the user through what to do.
Survival rates from a cardiac arrest increase by 50-70% when a defibrillator is available. We hope it never has to get used, but great to know it will be vital if it does.

Public Access Defibrillator (PAD)

Today we've been out making sure defibrillators are clearly marked with their addresses and What3Words locations, this can make a huge difference in an emergency. Every second counts when someone is having a cardiac arrest.

For caretakers of defibrillators in the Lancing, Shoreham, Southwick and Worthing areas, here’s a quick reminder to help:

- Register your defibrillator:
You can register it on the UK’s national defibrillator database (like the one maintained by the Resuscitation Council UK or via Circuit), so that ambulance dispatchers can direct bystanders to it immediately during a call.
- Check the details:
Ensure the device has its physical address and what3words location clearly displayed on the outer casing for quick reference.

If anyone notices a defibrillator in those areas unlabelled, please reach out to our team so we can add the necessary information on it.

Proof that the best things come in small packages! 🚑💨 Our new all-electric fast response vehicles might look like they belong in a cartoon, but they’re serious about saving lives (and the planet). Perfect for squeezing through traffic and making a grand, eco-friendly entrance! ⚡️🌱

Today was a highly productive and impactful day for our team! Managing three different events simultaneously requires excellent coordination and a strong commitment. Here is a more detailed summary of our activities:

- Sunbeam Motorcycle Run: Our team was on hand to support this historic event, monitoring participants to ensure that the vintage motorcycle community could enjoy their day safely.🏍

- Steadfast AGM: We provided dedicated coverage for the Steadfast Annual General Meeting, ensuring the proceedings remained secure and offering assistance to members and organizers throughout the day.🧓👨‍🦳

- Sussex FA at Culver Road: At the Sussex County FA headquarters, we cover the first aid protocols for the scheduled events, maintaining a vigilant watch over the crowds and being ready to provide immediate first aid if required. ⚽️ 🥅

Across all three locations, our members demonstrated professionalism and readiness. While our goal is always prevention, we remained fully prepared to intervene and help whenever the need arises, ensuring that every event could conclude successfully and safely.

What an action-packed evening in Shoreham last night for our St John Adur Valley Network Adults & Cadets 🚑🔥

A huge thanks to lizzie & Vicky for putting together a fantastic casualty scenarios night that really put everyone’s skills to the test. From managing a patient with a serious head injury, to treating a casualty with a piece of glass embedded in their arm, and even responding to a collapsed patient requiring CPR shortly after being carefully placed into the recovery Position. With some team coordination our volunteers stepped up brilliantly under pressure.

We also discovered there are some seriously impressive acting skills within the team! Our casualty role players brought the scenarios to life with such realism that it challenged everyone to think, react, and adapt just like in real incidents 👏🎭

The Cadets and Adults worked side by side, managing scenes, delivering first aid, and supporting each other just as they would out on Events. The energy, teamwork, and commitment on display were incredible to see 👏

These sessions are what help keep our volunteers ready to respond when it matters most and last night was a perfect example of that in action.

The St John Adur Valley Network was delighted to be invited by the North Lancing Community Association to share a presentation about the important work of St John Ambulance in the local community. At the gathering, members of the Network introduced the history and mission of St John Ambulance, highlighting its commitment to providing first aid training, supporting public events, and promoting health and safety for all.
A key feature of the event was a practical demonstration of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the correct use of a defibrillator. The friendly and knowledgeable team guided attendees through each step, explaining the vital role these techniques play in saving lives during a cardiac emergency. Participants were encouraged to ask questions and even try their hand at using the training equipment, ensuring everyone could gain hands-on experience and build confidence.
Throughout the session, the presenters emphasised the importance of community involvement in first aid. They shared inspiring stories of volunteers whose quick actions had made a real difference, and provided advice on how anyone can access St John Ambulance training and resources. The atmosphere was warm and supportive, fostering a sense of unity and empowerment among all who attended.
The event was warmly received by the North Lancing Community Association, and many attendees expressed appreciation for the practical knowledge gained. The St John Adur Valley Network looks forward to further opportunities to support and engage with local residents, helping to make the community safer and more resilient.

🚑 Supporting Runners at The Steyning Stinger 🏃‍♂️⛰️

Today volunteers from St John Ambulance Adur Valley Network were proud to provide first aid cover at The Steyning Stinger, supporting runners taking part in the Half Marathon, 30K and Full Marathon across the beautiful (and challenging!) South Downs.

With steep climbs, muddy trails and plenty of determination on display, our volunteers were on hand throughout the day to keep participants safe and provide medical support whenever it was needed.

A huge well done to everyone who took part in this fantastic event, and thank you to the organisers and fellow volunteers who helped make the day a success. 👏

💚 If you’d like to learn lifesaving skills and support events like this in your community, consider volunteering with St John Ambulance.

Today we had a fantastic community collaboration! It’s great to see St John Ambulance (SJA) Adur Valley working so closely with a local healthcare provider like Goring Hall Hospital. 🏥

The fact that Lizzie and Sally hold roles in both organizations made the coordination seamless. Events like these are vital for "demystifying" first aid and making life-saving techniques accessible to the public. Having Peter, David, and Gill there to engage directly with people is exactly how the charity builds confidence in the community turning a daunting subject like CPR into a conversation.

If your club, workplace, or community organisation would like support with learning more about defibrillators or first aid, we would love to help.
