One of the most important messages from Deaf Awareness Week is this:
Hearing loss doesn’t always look the way people expect.
It’s not always obvious.
It’s not always picked up early.
And it’s often explained away.
In children, it can be mistaken for:
• Not listening
• Being distracted
• Struggling at school
In adults, it’s often brushed off as:
• “Just getting older”
• “Nothing serious”
• “I’ll deal with it later”
But the earlier hearing changes are recognised, the easier it is to support them.
That might mean hearing technology, small adjustments, or simply understanding what’s going on.
Left too long, it can lead to frustration, fatigue, and withdrawal from everyday situations.
Deaf Awareness Week is about breaking that cycle — by recognising the signs and acting sooner.
If you’ve been putting it off, you’re not alone. But it is worth looking into.
