SOME HISTORY

On the 7th June 2014, The League of Friends of Johnson Community Hospital celebrated its Diamond Jubilee Celebration in the grounds of Johnson Community Hospital. The League of Friends of Spalding Hospitals, now known as the Friends of Johnson Community Hospital, was formed by a group of ladies headed by Nellie Fowler and a local bank manager. The aim was to care for the well-being and comfort of patients at the Johnson Hospital and the Mintling Home in Pinchbeck Road, later to be known as the Avalon Ward which was situated opposite the Johnson Hospital. Some years later, the Avalon hospital was re-located to Roman Bank in Spalding and was called the Welland Hospital. The League's aim in those early days was to provide toiletries, confectionery, outings and gifts for patients to make their stay in hospital a little more comfortable. Today, those aims continue, with a trolley shop manned by the friends giving a friendly smile and stopping for a chat. The patients also receive a gift at Christmas and on Mothering Sunday. Johnson Hospital was founded through a bequest in the wills of the Misses Elizabeth Ann and Mary Ann Johnson, daughters of the Reverend Walter Maurice Johnson, and dedicated by the Bishop of Lincoln in 1881. The cost of the building and equipping the hospital was £9044.9s.4d. In 1981, a group of business people launched the Centenary Appeal providing and equipping an Outpatients' Department in Priory Road which was a very welcome and well used facility. In 2010, HRH Princess Anne was invited to formally open the new hospital. She spent a happy time with staff and patients making it a very special day of celebration. The new name "The Johnson Community Hospital" depicts the special relationship with all the people of South Holland. It is "our" hospital where the doctors, nurses and staff are perpetuating the ideals laid down so many years ago. THE PRESENT DAY

The League of Friends is a registered charity - Charity Number 214542 - with trustees drawn from organisations and individuals in the local community wishing to support the hospital. As technology has advanced in recent years, the Friends have raised funds to provide equipment that would not have been possible through the NHS. In recent years, the League has launched appeals for scanners and other hi-tech equipment which have been generously supported with donations from businesses and voluntary organisations within the town and district. The hospital is fully equipped but there is always a need for additional equipment to improve the services and comfort of those attending the hospital. In the first six years since occupying the new hospital the Friends have purchased medical equipment and gifts in excess of £44,000.00 None of this would have been possible without the generous support from donations and legacies from businesses, voluntary organisations and the good people of South Holland and beyond.

Heartfelt Thanks to Sheila for Her Wonderful Knitted Donations

The Friends of Johnson Community Hospital would like to extend our warmest thanks to a very kind and talented lady, Sheila Blackford, for her thoughtful donation of beautifully knitted toys, children’s hats and blankets.

Today, I visited Diane Tilley’s house to collect a huge bag of Sheila’s handmade goodies. There are far too many delightful items to capture in just one picture! Sheila’s generosity and creativity will make a real difference to our fundraising.

With our Christmas Fayre coming up on Saturday, 22nd November at Pinchbeck Village Hall, Sheila’s knitted gifts will be just perfect to help us raise funds. These funds go towards buying items to support the hardworking nurses and auxiliary staff, and for the comfort of patients staying at Johnson Community Hospital.

Alongside the Fayre, the Friends will also be holding table-top sales at the hospital itself, where we’ll be offering a variety of festive items for sale – including our ever-popular Christmas cards.

Once again, thank you so much, Sheila, for your kindness and generosity, and also to Diane for helping us receive these wonderful gifts. Your support means the world to us.

Anonymous Donations Through JustGiving - Thank You!

The Friends of Johnson Community Hospital are delighted to share that we have received some generous donations through our JustGiving page in recent months. In April, we received £50, in June £25, and in July £100.

As a small charity, we are not subscribed to the facility that allows us to see the names of those who donate, which means these kind contributions have been made anonymously. While we may not know your names, we want to take this opportunity to say a heartfelt thank you. You will know who you are, and we hope you are reading this!

Every donation makes a real difference. Your generosity helps us to continue providing equipment for the hardworking nurses and auxiliary staff, as well as items that bring comfort and support to patients at Johnson Community Hospital.

To our anonymous donors – thank you again. Your kindness is truly appreciated.

A Little Comfort For Young Patients at Johnson Community Hospital

The Friends of Johnson Community Hospital are delighted to share news of our latest purchase, this time for the Urgent Treatment Centre – children’s toy storage, along with a table and chairs.

We all know that visiting hospital can be stressful for adults, but for children it can feel especially bewildering. These new items are intended to provide a little comfort and distraction, helping to ease any fears during their visit.

The Urgent Treatment Centre at Johnson Community Hospital is a fantastic resource for our community, giving local people somewhere to turn when they are not feeling their best. South Holland is truly fortunate to have such a facility, and the Friends are proud to play a small part in supporting it.

By providing these items, we hope not only to make children feel more at ease, but also to give some extra help to the doctors, nurses and auxiliary staff who work tirelessly in the UTC.

Of course, none of this would be possible without the kindness and generosity of the people of South Holland and beyond. Every donation, big or small, goes towards making a difference to patients and staff at Johnson Community Hospital.

Thank you for helping us continue this work.

A Lasting Tribute: Tree Planted in Honour of Nurse Teresa Sheriff

The Friends of Johnson Community Hospital recently visited the hospital’s peaceful garden — a beautiful, quiet space offering comfort and calm to patients, families, and visitors alike.

We are honoured to have made a donation towards the recent planting of a tree, together with a plaque, within the garden, now quietly growing in memory of Nurse Teresa Sheriff. Nurse Sheriff played a key role in the early days of Johnson Community Hospital, particularly in the establishment of the Blood and Eye Clinics, which continue to serve our community today.

This tree is a gentle tribute to a nurse whose legacy continues to touch lives. A place for reflection, remembrance, and peace.

The Little Things Make a Big Difference

Members of the Friends of Johnson Community Hospital recently visited the hospital for a photoshoot to showcase one of our latest contributions to patient wellbeing.

Thanks to the continued generosity of our supporters, the Friends' Charity has recently purchased a lovely selection of vases for use on the Welland Ward. While small in size, these thoughtful additions will help brighten up patient rooms and create a more welcoming and homely environment for those staying in hospital.

As a Charity, we are committed to supporting the hardworking nurses and auxiliary staff, and to enhancing the comfort and wellbeing of the patients in their care. Sometimes, it’s the little things – like a fresh bunch of flowers in a vase – that can make all the difference.

Thank you to everyone who continues to support us. Your kindness helps us keep doing what we do.

Keeping Cool: Friends Provide Much-Needed Fan for the Blood Clinic

Members of the Friends of Johnson Community Hospital recently visited the Blood Clinic for a quick photoshoot to mark the arrival of a much-needed piece of equipment. With temperatures rising and the original fan having broken down, the nurses, health support workers, volunteers and patients were feeling the heat. Thanks to the swift action of the Friends, a replacement fan was purchased and is now in place, helping to keep the clinic cool and comfortable.

The hardworking team at the Blood Clinic were incredibly grateful for the support, and it’s a small but important example of how donations directly benefit both staff and patients at the hospital.

None of this would be possible without the kind and generous support of the people of South Holland and beyond. Every donation helps, and we are truly grateful.

In the photo, we have Zoe Summerfield (Clinical Health Care Support Worker), Ollie Long (Clinical Health Care Support Worker), Julie Gray (Nurse in Charge), Christine Grocock (Friends' Secretary) and Stuart East (Friends' Vice-Chairman)

A Heartfelt Thank You from the Friends of Johnson Community Hospital

Yesterday, members of the Friends were honoured to meet Charley Morgan and Lesley Crawford – the daughter and wife of the late David Crawford, affectionately known to many as “Biscuit.” David, a well-known and respected retired publican, sadly passed away recently.

In his memory, the family kindly chose the Friends of Johnson Community Hospital as the recipient of donations made at his funeral, raising a total of £70.63. Charley and Lesley were joined by Mark and Sue Forth of Mark Forth Independent Funeral Services, who provided compassionate and professional support to the family during this difficult time.

We are deeply grateful to the Crawford family for choosing our charity. Their generous donation will go directly towards supporting our ongoing work providing much-needed resources and comfort to patients at the hospital.

On behalf of all our members, we extend our sincere thanks to Lesley, Charley, and everyone who contributed. Your kindness will make a difference.

In the picture we have Sue Forth, Stuart East (Friends' Vice-Chairman), Charley Morgan, Lesley Crawford, Carol Rowett (Friends' Member), Christine Lawton (Friends' President) and Mark Forth
