They don’t need me anymore. That’s what no one tells you about motherhood

It creeps in quietly…
Not when they start walking, or talking, or even going to school —
but later. When they stop asking for help. When they close the door behind them. When they start pulling away, and you’re left standing in a house that used to feel full.

No one prepares you for that ache.

The one that hits when you realise your job as their everything is slowly… ending.
When the cuddles stop.
When they don’t shout “MUM!” from the top of the stairs anymore.
When they ask to be dropped off around the corner because they don’t want their friends to see you 🥺

You spend years putting them first — loving them with every ounce of your being —
and then one day, you realise they’re okay without you.

And it hurts.

It’s a grief no one talks about.
A quiet kind of heartbreak.
Like… who even am I now?

But here’s the truth: they don’t need you like they used to…
but they still need you.

Just differently.
Quietly.
Steadily.

You’re still their home.

Separation broke me

I cried every single day for 18 months 😔

I didn’t even know that was possible. That a body could still function while falling apart that often. That a heart could keep beating through that much pain 💔

I remember sitting across from someone who’d been through the same and she said,
“It took me three years to get over my ex-husband.”

And I just stared at her.
Three years?
What?
So I still had another 18 months of this to go?

But here’s what I now know — six years on.
It’s not a number.
It’s not a date on the calendar.
It’s a scar that fades but never disappears.

There are still days it aches.
When I watch my children split their time between two homes.
When I remember the house I lost.
The friends who disappeared when I wasn’t part of the couple anymore.
The version of me who believed in forever and had to let go of that dream.

I had to walk away from everything I knew and rebuild my whole life from scratch.
Not with a blueprint. Not with a guidebook.
Just with grit, heartbreak, and a quiet belief that I would get through it ✨

And the truth is… no one really sees that part.
The raw, brutal, behind-the-scenes mess of it all.
They see the version now — the smile, the strength, the success.
But not the nights I lay on the kitchen floor shaking.
Not the mornings I dragged myself out of bed for my kids even though I didn’t want to keep going.

But do you know what?

It made me unstoppable 💥

Not unbroken. Not unaffected.
But unstoppable. Because once you’ve rebuilt your life from nothing —
you stop fearing everything.

If you’ve been through it, or you’re in it right now, I see you.
And I promise you — even if it hurts forever, it won’t break you forever 💛

❤️‍🩹 Tag a friend who needs this tonight. Let them know they’re not alone.

Let me introduce myself....

I’m Lyn Penman, Clinical Hypnotherapist and Psychotherapist, former Midwife and Mum to four amazing children.

I started my career as a Midwife and have a Bachelors Degree in Midwifery. I then moved into Pharmaceuticals working in pain management within the NHS and the private sector.

I then had an eleven year career break to have my family and look after my daughter and three sons. This has been THE most rewarding experience but at times a very challenging one and has taken me mentally and emotionally to places I never thought possible.

I have been there, felt that, thought that! You are not alone.
