🧠 What would happen if we faced another national emergency tomorrow?

The reality is stark: social care would not cope. That is not due to a lack of commitment or capability, but because the sector is being steadily dismantled by unsustainable pressures.

📉 Here’s where we stand:

131,000+ vacancies across the sector (Skills for Care, 2024)

40,000 skilled staff lost through "no jab, no job" policies, many never returned

Significant cost pressures from National Insurance and minimum wage increases, with no matched uplift in funding

Sudden changes to visa rules tightening the recruitment pipeline

Just 86 new care home beds built across the UK in 2023 (CQC, 2024)

Demand for care from older people has risen by 21%, yet capacity continues to shrink

The consequence?

Providers are being forced to downsize, hand back contracts, or close services altogether. Dedicated staff are burning out under the weight of systemic neglect.

And now the sector is expected to implement the Fair Pay Agreement without a clear funding plan in place?

Social care has been pushed to breaking point.
Today’s announcement will reveal if anything is about to change.

For too long, governments have patched over the cracks with recycled promises and consultations that go nowhere. Meanwhile, providers are closing. Staff are burning out. And thousands are left waiting for the care they’re entitled to.

This is not a system in need of reform.

A disabled person waiting months on end for support..
An older adult stuck in hospital because no care package exists..

• A government that LISTENS to those on the frontline, and acts on it

On Tuesday 20th May at 2PM, we’re raising our voices online to defend a sector that holds our communities together.

This week, the Prime Minister announced plans to freeze overseas recruitment, cutting off a vital workforce lifeline for social care.

This comes just weeks after the refusal to fund Employers’ National Insurance Contributions (ENICs).

Enough is enough.

We’re defending:
• Care for millions of older and disabled people
• Support for unpaid carers who rely on respite
• 1.59 million workers, already stretched to breaking point
• A sector that adds £68.1 billion to the UK economy
• Services that save the NHS £35 for every £100 spent on care

💚 Social care is economic, social, and moral infrastructure.
We must act before it’s dismantled.
