Mansfield Massage and Movement

Mansfield Massage and Movement Remedial Soft Tissue Therapy in St Ives, Cambs. And sometimes cake ;). Membership of a Professional Association (PA) is entirely voluntary. And they really can.

Pain relief, injury rehab, mobility restoration and performance improvement for humans of all ages and fitness levels. MMM started life as lone practitioner Nicki Mansfield - a Remedial Soft Tissue Therapist who graduated from the London School of Sports Massage in 2011. For the first few years Nicki worked hard to build a loyal client base out of her treatment room in St Ives, Cambridgeshire, and a chiropractic office in Ware, Hertfordshire. In 2016 the business expanded to a third location at a fantastic, lively gym in Dry Drayton, Cambridgeshire, and the practice was christened Field Massage and Movement. The following year saw Nicki wave a fond farewell to the Hertfordshire arm of the practice so that she could focus her efforts on serving the people of Cambridgeshire. This dedication to her local area enabled Nicki to recruit some excellent team members so that, from 2018, Nicki was a lone therapist no more! A business name change in 2019 and two team therapists later, Mansfield Massage and Movement (aka MMM Therapy) was very proud to be restoring functional movement to the athletes, office workers, retirees, parents and school children of St Ives, Dry Drayton and everywhere in between! Sadly, the enforced temporary closure of all close contact services for the vast majority of 2020 resulted in the permanent closure of the Dry Drayton branch of MMM Therapy, and the departure of the small team, leaving Nicki to focus on running a single practice location for the first time in her 10 year career. Along the way, Nicki has continually supplemented her basic training with courses across the UK in specialised treatment techniques, biomechanical assessment and in-depth joint-specific studies. She is currently extraordinarily excited to be studying for an Advanced Diploma in Functional Movement, run by one of her all time heroes in the world of fascia, function and movement (ask her about it when you see her - she'll bore you with the geek!), and supplements this with weekly CPD sessions in the worlds of functional anatomy (including dissection studies), clinical case studies, scientific research and therapy business management, as well as regular get togethers with fellow manual therapists for knowledge sharing and support (and coffee. Nicki is a very proud member of both the Institute for Soft Tissue Therapists (ISRM) and the Sports Therapy Association (STA), two of the best Professional Associations in the field (by a very long way, in Nicki's opinion). We join them because we want to be held accountable. Think of it as a Quality Mark for the manual therapy world. A PA's most basic role is to monitor their members’ Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and the currency of their First Aid qualifications, so that you are guaranteed a safe, high quality service. Nicki has been a member of the ISRM since she was a soft tissue student and recently added membership of the STA to her portfolio after participating in some of their CPD and finding it, and their member support system, to be of an outstanding quality. Between them the ISRM and STA lead the way during the Covid pandemic, not only in representing their members in discussions with Public Health England (PHE) but in supporting their members through incredibly difficult times. Collaboration between the two resulted in the creation of the vanguard of Covid-secure practice guidelines - a standard of outstanding practicality and safety that all the other Professional Associations have subsequently striven to follow - and the establishment of a vast and sturdy member support and continuing education network that continues to grow and deepen even now. Nicki is a highly experienced manual therapist committed to helping you to achieve your goals, whether they are to compete in an Ironman competition, to lift weights safely or simply to walk around the block without your knees giving you jip! She is passionate about movement and really rather geeky when it comes to restoring function where it has been lost, be that through injury or through long-term movement patterning. She listens to your symptoms of mobility and discomfort and how these are affecting your daily life, looks for the musculoskeletal dysfunction(s) involved, uses active and passive assessments and tests to investigate what may be causing it (them) and then puts her wide skillset of soft tissue techniques to work to help bring about specific changes to your musculoskeletal system in order to restore the function that has been lost. Once function is restored, movement is freer, easier, smoother and lighter. Your energy will return, your mood will lift, your pain will dissipate, your mobility will improve and your strength will increase. Put more simply (told you we’re a bit geeky!), Nicki helps you to MOVE BETTER so that you FEEL BETTER and can DO MORE! Whether ‘more’ for you is to walk the kids to school and back without feeling stiff and achey, return to sports after an injury or surgery, achieve a new personal best at the gym or even go to a gym for the first time ever, Nicki can help you to achieve it. We all have bodies that we regularly put through the mill, regardless of how we use them on a daily basis, and most of us accept the aches and pains we feel without realising how, in the right hands, they can be simply and effectively addressed. By drawing on the wide range of advanced manual therapy techniques in which Nicki excels - by stimulating, relaxing and reorganising the joint and soft tissue restrictions that we find - she can help you to overcome the physical obstacles that are blocking your way to succeeding in your chosen pursuit. The role that you play in your own improvement is as important as Nicki's, of course, and so you can expect to be actively involved in your treatments and, where appropriate, for her to recommend exercises for you to incorporate into your daily life, to strengthen and re-educate those areas of your body that may need it. Of course, you may not even realise that your body is under-performing. You may simply be experiencing pain. You may have had massages in the past and can recognise the feeling that it’s long overdue time you had another. Or you may have appealed to your GP about your ongoing back/neck/joint pain and have withstood as much ‘anti-inflammatories and rest’ as you are willing to put up with! Whether you suffer from back ache, desk slump, stiff neck, tight shoulders or joint pain, or you feel that your body is holding you back from reaching the goals you want to reach, Nicki can help you. Most of us do not realise how good our body is supposed to feel because most of us stopped moving the way that we are designed to move long ago. Nicki can help you restore that innate function. Move better. Feel better. Do more. Get in touch!

On this World Autism Awareness Day, why not check out my guest spot on last night’s kick-off of a new reflection series of the brilliant Sports Therapy Association podcast, hosted by the one and only Matt Phillips of fame, where guests are invited to reflect on one of the 200+ podcast episodes in the back catalogue.

I picked a 2023 ep that heralded the first appearance of the fantastic Alistair Beverley whose work in the field of physiotherapy for people with learning disabilities has had a huge impact on me.

I share how learning from him while simultaneously making my own personal discovery (at fifty-blummin-one years old 👵🏼) of my own place on the neurodivergent spectrum have fundamentally changed, not only the way I practice, but how I interact with every human, everywhere. Including myself.

Link to watch the YouTube recording is in the comments, or search for the Sports Therapy Association on your favourite podcast app.

The cranium is just one of the areas you’ll learn how to functionally assess in Owen Lewis’ 4-day Functional Assessment course, here in St Ives, Cambs. (not Cornwall!!) this Sep and Oct.

Did you know that the cranium shares biomechanical patterning with many other parts of the body that rotate around a central axis? Understanding how one part moves allows you to build your pattern recognition skills to be able to assess the whole body in any movement – an incredibly valuable tool when faced with the time restrictions of a client consultation.

This is what Owen teaches. Check first comment below for course listings and booking links.

Within a single weekend of learning with this man, a few years back, I quickly reached the conclusion that the 🤯 emoji must have been created especially to describe the effect he has on his students. And I mean that in the nicest, most clinically valuable way.

It has been my pleasure to host him for a couple of 1-day courses, here in St Ives, over the past couple of years, and I am now deeply honoured to welcome him back to Cambs. for his pivotal 4-day Functional Assessment course this autumn.

If you haven’t yet had the pleasure of learning from this brilliant human, allow me to introduce him for you here.

Owen Lewis is a highly educated and experienced clinician, educator and, most recently, author in the field of human movement.

In his busy clinic Owen works with a wide variety of clients that regularly includes professional athletes, dancers, and musicians. He has been taught by some of the leading pioneers including Thomas Myers, Robert Schleip, David Tiberio, and Diane Lee, and spent many years teaching for Anatomy Trains before creating Born to Move with his friend and colleague James Earls.

In his phenomenal 4-day Functional Assessment course, Owen takes Diane Lee’s Integrated Systems Model of rotational biomechanics as a base from which he combines dynamic postural and functional analysis to provide you with a fast, efficient, and client-centred assessment of the whole body.

Owen is a philosophy nerd, a big lover of art, poetry, anatomy, and sport, and a very clever man. The way Owen sees the world through all these lenses at once is fascinating. The way he blends language and examples from each field to draw parallels and metaphors to help explain the subjects he teaches is truly wondrous. His unique teaching style enhances his students’ cognitive uptake by stimulating unexpected, often non-linear, connections in their minds, leading them to embody the learning at a deep level individually meaningful to them.

Come join us. He WILL 🤯 blow your mind 🤯

I personally guarantee it.

My entry into the world of CPD hosting last year was a baptism of fire, with none other than the phenomenal James Earls putting his trust in me to establish a UK home for Born to Move.

James has returned many times since then and, very soon, I welcome him back again!

While he certainly needs no introduction, here’s a short bio to help you with your (surely imminent) realisation that you need some James in your CPD calendar!!

James Earls is a writer, lecturer and bodyworker of more than 30 years, whose relaxed and humorous style of sharing his learning finds audiences across a wide spectrum of manual therapy and movement professionals.

You’d be forgiven for thinking that James is an anatomy nerd. You wouldn’t be wrong, exactly, but his passion is movement. According to James, to be able to understand movement we need to be able to describe it, and that’s where the anatomy fits in.

Understanding the anatomy, the mechanics, and the logic of the language of anatomy, James believes, is key to appreciating the entire body in movement.

James’ books and courses are his way of distilling all he has learned about the ways in which humans move – from the teachings of his many great teachers, to his (definitely geeky) observations and experiments with his own deliberate movements, and from his academic research and practical application of theory, to his three decades of personal interaction with his bodywork clients and students across the globe.

James combines evolutionary and comparative anatomy, fascial continuities, force continuity and transfer, elastic recoil, and more in all his educational offerings. The clarity he brings to understanding the whole system at play – by merging the soft tissue and the skeletal elements of the moving body, along with the reasons why we move the way that we do – is, in my opinion, profoundly beautiful.

His extraordinary capacity to draw on his own extensive experience and education and skilfully distil it into a gentle and meaningful ‘so what?’ often leaves James’ students, rather than baffled by the detail, with the eerie feeling that they knew it all along.
