In these extreme temperatures, remember:

- Never step barefoot on hard landscaping outside, particularly those living with Diabetes or numbness to their feet, these surfaces can burn quickly.

- As tempting as it is to go without, please continue to wear compression hosiery as normal. Swollen legs can crack and weep easily, and as we are all acutely aware, there are flies everywhere at the minute.

- Apply a simple (or prescribed, if you have one) moisturiser; well moisturised skin is better equipped to retain body fluids and reduce the risk of dehydration in the vulnerable.

A lovely example of early haemosiderosis on the ankle. This gentleman assumed a new pack of socks were staining his skin and tried to scrub the discolouration away.

Haemosiderosis is caused by haemoglobin iron leaving the blood vessels and settling in the skin, usually in response to high blood pressure or venous insufficiency.
The staining is painless but can be permanent if the contributing factors are not controlled.

If you think you have haemosiderosis and are not currently receiving treatment for high blood pressure or poor circulation, start by visiting your Pharmacy for a blood pressure assessment.

From there, both your Practise Nurse and your Podiatrist can assist with ongoing vascular assessment and skin management.

Bed socks on tonight folks! 🧦

An electric blanket can be a valuable tool to warm the bed before settling in for the night, however....

Those of you with Peripheral Arterial Disease, Raynaud's or any general poor circulation, begin on a lower setting and gradually increase to a comfortable level. Climbing into a hot bed could easily overpower a weak arterial system and lead to cramp ⚡️

❗ Snow has been forecast this week with some parts of the county expected to receive snowfall as early as this evening.

❄️ If you must drive during this time, please take extra care on the roads.
🚗 Make sure to clear all snow off the roof of your car before you set off and never leave the windscreen to defrost unattended.
⚠️ Avoid harsh braking and leave an adequate stopping distance between yourself and the car in front of you.
⏱️ The roads may be busier than normal, so try to allow extra time for your journey.

Our local policing teams will be out and about as usual. Stay safe everyone!
