In this interview we discuss the relationship between hypothyroid symptoms and hidden thiamine deficiency, why tests are not accurate, and how thiamine can sometimes address nervous system dysregulation, gut issues and a whole host of other symptoms.

During my healing journey with Hashimoto’s, fatigue was one of my most significant symptoms. I also had low blood pressure. One of my physicians said “No wonder you’re so tired, your blood pressure is so low!” And then I discovered thiamine and my fatigue resolved and my blood pressure normalized!

In this week’s episode of the Thyroid Pharmacist Healing Conversations Podcast, I sit down with thiamine expert and nutritional therapist Elliot Overton to uncover what might be one of the most underrecognized root causes of thyroid fatigue, gut issues, POTS, and more: thiamine deficiency (vitamin B1).

Even if you’re eating a nutrient-rich diet, chronic stress, medications (like metronidazole), alcohol, gut inflammation, and even tea can block your body from absorbing or using thiamine properly. And guess what? Most standard tests won’t catch it.

Inside this episode, you'll learn:
- Why thiamine deficiency is often functional or localized—not detectable by blood tests

- How thiamine powers your mitochondria, brain, and gut

- Why symptoms like fatigue, dizziness, constipation, and brain fog may all tie back to low B1

- The best forms of thiamine: benfotiamine (for nerve pain + energy), TTFD (for gut + POTS), and sulbutiamine (for focus + mood)

- Why high-dose thiamine (600–1800 mg/day) can be a game-changer—sometimes overnight

- How to prevent side effects by combining it with magnesium, potassium, and a full B-complex

If you’ve tried everything and still feel off, this episode could be the missing piece. Thiamine changed my life, and I’ve seen it do the same for countless others.

Just launched a brand-new, one of a kind supplement for brain health:

Liposomal+Nanoencapsulated Plasmalogen

In the past, I have discussed many nutrient interventions for brain health and neuroinflammation. One of the most interesting supplements in recent years is a class of molecule called plasmalogens. They are a type of phospholipid, which are extremely important for the brain.

Plasmalogens are depleted during age-related cognitive decline, neuroinflammatory conditions, and especially Alzheimer's.

In simplistic terms: Plasmalogens can essentially "switch off" the inflammatory response in the brain. Replenishing them may be the new "frontier" of fixing age-related brain degeneration

One of the world-leading experts in this field sells a "plasmalogen precursor" supplement, which I think is excellent. However, it costs $200 for less than 1 month's supply. Its just not affordable for the majority of people.

The research shows that sea-food derived plasmalogens CAN still be useful. There have been several studies using animal-derived plasmalogens to improve cognitive outcomes and brain health

The issue has been that dietary plasmalogens are not well absorbed in the gut and are destroyed during digestion

This had me and some colleagues thinking. What if we could package plasmalogen into a formula which bypasses the digestive process?

The Japanese have used nano-encapsulation to improve absorption of this molecule.

So I formulated a product called "Mind+" :

50% liposomal
50% nanoencapsulation

It just launched, and the company has a very small number of bottles. It is only sold on website (LIMITED STOCK) and ship globally, or on Amazon US. I am hopeful that this product will help people, and it was extremely difficult to maufacture. This is not my company, but people I know personally, who I consulted with, who are interested in manufacturing solid nutritional products.

By supporting my company, you are funding scientific research on thiamine.

I regularly receive criticism over the fact that I own a nutritional supplement company, Objective Nutrients. This highlights an obvious conflict of interest. I reiterate: you can purchase from any brand.

However, you should know: By supporting my company, you are funding scientific research on thiamine.

A significant portion of our company profit will be going towards funding mechanistic and pre-clinical research this year and in the future. I don't believe other companies are doing this.

Up until recently, 90% of our profit was simply reinvested into more stock and product development (4 new products launching soon)

This year, we are finally in a financial position which will allow us to begin funding research. I am in discussions with various scientists, and we are organizing studies on:

- Non-coenzyme effects on traumatic brain injury
- Different types of thiamine for Alzheimer's Disease
- Different forms of thiamine for Parkinson's disease

I would also like to investigate the effect of TTFD vs Benfotiamine for gastrointestinal issues, although this is slightly more difficult to design and coordinate.

We sent Carl from Objective Nutrients on a scouting mission deep in the Malaysian jungle

He is searching for a NEW form of thiamine (vitamin B1), which could be 5-10x more potent than benfotiamine

Fingers crossed he'll find it, but who knows?

Maybe by August 2025 👀

There is a specialized form of vitamin B1 that no one knows about

It has insane potential for treating neurodegenerative disease

By weight, its neuroprotective/anti-inflammatory effects may 5-10x more potent than benfotiamine 👀

It was shown to significantly delay the progression of ALS

You will not find this anywhere else

We at Objective Nutrients are currently designing and will be funding pre-clinical studies this year:

- Alzheimer's
- Traumatic brain injury
- Parkinson's

We have spent a long time and a significant amount of money, hiring an independent panel of experts to assess safety so that we can bring this to the people

One word: AUGUST

Magnesium sulphate reduced migraine headache intensity by 50% or more in 80% of study participants

Within 15 minutes

Route of administration: Intravenous

Other forms of magnesium taken orally also work, but are generally slower: glycinate, malate, taurate, threonate

HOW DOES THIS WORK????

My first ever paper just published - Where we attempt to explain how

Can Thiamine deficiency be a hidden cause of chronic gut problems? Most doctors will laugh at the idea

I've known that it can for over 6 years, and thousands of followers have successfully used it to self treat their gut issues since then.

However, there wasn't ONE SINGLE single academic review on this topic. So we wrote one!

In this article we discuss the mechanistic evidence for why thiamine can be a stealth cause of common functional gut disorders

Why is the gut uniquely susceptible to a deficiency vs other tissues?

Why does practically no one in nutrition or medicine know about this?

We present a novel theory that B1 deficiency can be LOCALIZED to the gut, for various reasons, and this will not likely show up on any test results.

Based on the available evidence, we can say that in some cases, a thiamine deficiency triggers the same mechanisms known to drive IBS/SIBO, intestinal inflammation, intestinal permeability, GERD, gastroparesis, etc

A simple nutrient deficency can cause all of these symptoms, and will not be detected by tests:

- Bloating
- Gas
- Reflux
- Gastroparesis
- Constipation
- Diarrhea
- Leaky gut

Remarkably, it was known since the 1940s, yet was essentially forgotten by clinical medicine

The data has never been pooled together into one single review, until now.
