Heel pain affects more than 10% of people in the UK and in most cases, the pain is caused by some form of mechanical injury. The pain is triggered by small repetitive injuries that occur at a rate faster than the body can heal them.
For assessment, diagnosis and treatment, book a Biomechanic assessment today with our Podiatrist Carol Hawkins. Carol specialises in musculoskeletal treatments, manipulation techniques and orthotic provision.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a condition that causes inflammation in many joints of the body but, particularly affects the hands, feet, wrists, ankles and knees.

Unlike osteoarthritis, which is caused by wear and tear, RA is a chronic inflammatory disease where a faulty immune system attacks the tissue that lines and cushions the joints, leaving them swollen, painful and stiff. RA tends to affect the smaller joints such as the fingers and toes first, so feet are often one of the first places to be affected.

The theme of RA Awareness Week 2023 is , showing how day-to-day activities can drain your battery when you live with RA.

If you haven’t tackled the dreaded school shoe shopping yet, here’s our best tips and advice😁

Before you set off, draw around their feet on paper or thin card and cut these out. Don’t forget to mark the right and left. You can minimise the risk of boredom and the number of shoes you need to try, by slipping the templates into various styles. If they touch the inside edges of the shoe, you can rule these out or go up a size. Even better, if the shoe’s insoles lift out, just ask them to stand on it. We recommend a thumbnail width between the end of the longest toe and the shoe.

Once the size is correct, you can concentrate on the fit.

Shoes should have a way to adjust over the middle of the foot. This could be with a strap or buckle, or with laces.
Next check to see how bendy the sole is. A good shoe should bend at the toe and not under the arch. Ideally, the bend should line up with the big toe joint on the foot.
They should be able to wiggle their toes inside the shoe.
Their heel should not slip up and down inside the shoe. If it does check the fastening.
Shoes should be tried with the same socks or tights that will be worn for school.

School shoes do not need to be expensive, but they need to fit well.
Bear in mind that your child’s feet may grow within the first term and the shoes will need to be replaced.
