ROYAL MAIL POSTAGE HEADS-UP!
There is a pop-up message on our home page which says:
** ROYAL MAIL WARNING!! if you select our basic UK free post option be prepared to wait upto 5 working days as Royal Mail are particularly bad at present. All 'Tracked' parcels have been delivered next day recently**
So, some background on our free post option. So, for many years our free post service (RM24) was reliable and we very rarely had an issue. However, a few years ago the quality of service started deteriorating, and we gave a heads-up (on Facebook) that we might have to charge for postage with the basic service being tracked and a cost involved.
It seemed for some areas of the country the basic RM24 service was frequently taking up to a week (5 working days). We added this warning at checkout when selecting the postage for an order. We relented removing the RM24 free option as many customers were still getting their post swiftly.
However, it's reached a new low lately and orders are frequently taking longer then 5 working days and we are having to resend many orders.
It's difficult to get an official line, but quizzing some posties off the record, and reading between the lines, some conclusions we have come to are:
- Posties do not receive as many letters these days, sacks aren't as full so the justification for a daily delivery isn't there.
- There are frequently staffing issues at Royal Mail
- RM are prioritising parcels now, and this is getting busier. Most of our small orders are sent as a large letter (post box size) so basic services like RM24 are way down the priority list when things are busy in parcels.
For now, we will leave our postage matrix in place and closely monitor things, but we cannot stress enough, if your order is required within the week, please please select the 'Tracked' option
Likely scenario if this situation continues is we will remove free post RM24, with most packages being sent Tracked with a nominal charge. However, free 'Tracked' post will still be achieved over a set order value (to be determined).
Note: we don't currently pass on the full cost of a Tracked order – we charge £3, but it cost us nearer £5
