Fungal Nails - Onychomycosis

Fungal nail affect on average around 14 % of the population.
Fungal infections are caused because of fungus living in the environment of footwear. Small cracks on the nail or surrounding skin allow the fungus to enter.
Usually due to nail injury, possibly diabetes can be a contributing factor, or weakened immunity.
The treatment can be extremely difficult to eliminate. It takes a year for a nail to grow out. Successful treatments are started on the onset of the infection. A fungal infection will never be eliminated without treatment.
Tablets can be taken Terbinafine. https://www.nhs.uk/medicines/terbinafine/ this is by prescription and having a liver function tests regularly will be required.
In the more severe cases total nail avulsion (removal) of the nail will be the best cause of action. https://www.whittington.nhs.uk/document.ashx?id=10781
The use of a lacquer Amorolfine this another treatment. https://www.podiatry-world.co.uk/p/pharmaceuticals-sundries/pharmaceuticals/amorolfine-nail-lacquer-5-3ml-pom/42472 Applied 1-2 times a week treatment usually 6-12 months dependent on how serious the infection is.

Fungal Nails - Onychomycosis

Fungal nail is also know as onychomycosis which is very common. They affect on average around 14 % of the population.

Some people may suffer discomfort due to the thickness of the nail but most fungal infections are not serious. They do not look aesthetically nice in appearance and people may feel uncomfortable showing their nails because of this. Sometimes the nail can become separated from the nail bed.

Fungal nail infections may cause nails to become discolored, thick, fragile, or cracked.

Fungal infections are caused because of the fungus living in the environment. Small cracks on the nail or surrounding skin allow the fungus to enter. It is also extremely contagious so effects other nails surrounding the nail which is infected.
Usually a nail injury occurs due to trauma to the nail or nail bed, diabetes is a contributing factor too. Weakened immunity or poor circulation which is narrowing of the arteries constricting blood flow to the extremities can also cause fungal infections.

Vertical ridges

Our nails naturally develop slight vertical ridges which furrows and runs from the tip of your fingernail down to the cuticle.

We usually don’t notice these until around age 50. It is nothing to worry about more than a side effect of aging. This occurs possibly due to a slowing of cell turnover.

The most common reason is a lack of moisture and improper nutrition. As the nails age, their capacity to absorb nutrients diminishes, subsequently affecting their growth.

However, severe and raised ridges can be a sign of diabetes, or iron deficiency anemia. Nutritional deficiencies, such as a lack of vitamin A, vitamin B, vitamin B12 or keratin can result in fingernail ridges. Hormonal changes can also cause ridges to appear.

Some other potential causes could be:-

Eating disorders
Eczema or Psoriasis
Exposure to chemicals
Hypothyroidism
Rheumatoid arthritis
Trauma to the nail

If the ridges do seem severe, or they pop up out of the blue, Please contact us on the following link where we can advise you https://www.absolute-footcare.co.uk/
or contact you GP.

How to treat Athlete's Foot: and Treatment
What we know about Athlete’s Foot:

Athlete’s foot is a common fungal infection which also goes by the name of Tinea Pedis which is a form of ringworm. The condition causes an itchy, stinging and sometimes burning rash on the skin of either or both feet. It’s been known to affect the tops of your feet and the soles of your feet and heels. The infection usually begins between the toes. your skin may become scaly, cracked or even develop blisters which can cause your feet to smell bad too.

Evaluating Athlete’s Foot:

At Absolute Foot Care before any treatment takes place we will evaluate your feet either from our clinic or in the comfort of your own home. We operate in and around Wolverhampton, Stafford and Shropshire.

To get a better look at your condition we will examine, palpate, probe and trim/thin your tissue to identify whether or not the symptoms lineup with those of Athlete’s Foot. We will also identify any underlying health issues contributing to your condition as you may be more likely to develop athlete’s foot if you have:
Athlete's Foot, Chiropody, Podiatrist,

Diabetes.

Obesity.

A weakened immune system.

Tissue damage or wounds on your feet.

However Athlete’s foot is a common condition and estimates suggest that 3% to 15% of the population has athlete’s foot, and 70% of the population will get athlete’s foot at some point in their lives.

How can Athlete’s Foot be treated?

Don’t worry, we can get your feet back into their best condition by providing a treatment that’s suited to your individual symptoms. This may include over the counter topical anti-fungal medications but if that option doesn’t treat your infection we may prescribe topical or oral prescription-strength anti-fungal medications.

If you’re looking for relief in the meantime it’s recommended that you soak your feet in salt water or diluted vinegar to help dry up any blisters. The condition commonly occurs in people whose feet have become very sweaty while confined within tight-fitting shoes so if possible try alternative footwear in the meantime.

Corns and hard skin on your feet are extremely painful.

They are caused by friction and pressure from repeated actions. Some sources of this friction and pressure include:

Wearing bad-fitting shoes and socks. Tight shoes and high heels can squeeze areas of the feet. If your shoes are loose, your foot may repeatedly slide and rub against the shoe. Your foot may also rub against a seam or stitch inside the shoe. Socks that don't fit right can also be a problem.
👠

Not wearing socks. Wearing shoes and sandals without socks can cause friction on your feet.

November is Diabetes Awareness month.

We thought we would bring to your attention and highlight a few things you may not know about feet and diabetes

When it comes to diabetes, you are probably not thinking about feet at all. Having diabetes means you are at a much greater risk of developing foot problems.

So what is the connection?

1. Raised blood glucose levels can damage sensation in your feet.
2 Your overall circulation can be affected, this means less blood supply to your feet.
3. Compromised blood supply to your feet can cause cramps and pains, the feeling of pins and needles.

As with anything to do with your body, if any issues are left they can escalate.

It is important that you check your feet daily
Make sure you keep to a healthy diet
Take steps to keep active and exercise regularly.
