Supporting Ann Williams – Staying Independent with the Right Help at Home
At Promedica24, we know that choosing care for a loved one is never an easy decision. It’s not just about practical help, but about preserving dignity, comfort and a sense of home. For Ann Williams, a retired nursing manager, that sense of familiarity meant everything. Her story is a powerful reminder of how the right care, delivered in the right way, can restore confidence, safety and quality of life.
Ann has always led an active and independent life. She trained at Addenbrooke’s Hospital and worked in several NHS roles, eventually managing a Coronary Care Unit. She’s travelled extensively, both across the UK and abroad, and even lived in Athens and Paris during the 1960s. With a background in healthcare, Ann holds understandably high expectations for the standard of care she receives.
After caring for her husband until his death, Ann found it difficult to regain her independence. Her mobility became more limited, and despite receiving day care visits and some overnight support from family members, it was clear that she needed more consistent, round-the-clock care. Her family began researching care options in earnest. They contacted several companies but were disappointed by the lack of responsiveness from some and overly persistent sales approaches from others. That changed when they got in touch with Promedica24.
From the start, the Promedica24 team was quick to respond, professional and informative. The family appreciated the way we handled every question and the detailed literature we provided. What really stood out was our fully managed live-in care service, taking responsibility for recruiting, employing and supervising carers. Compared to previous care experiences, this approach offered much-needed structure and consistency. Ann had already tried day care, live-in care through other providers, and two periods in care homes. Those experiences gave her and her family a clear idea of what they were looking for care that allowed her to stay in her own home, maintain control, and feel safe and supported. Promedica24 ticked those boxes.
Ann’s live-in carers help with everything from personal care and meal preparation to managing medication and offering companionship. One major benefit has been the return of her social life. With the help of her carer, who drives her mobility car, Ann is once again able to go out to see friends, run errands, and enjoy small outings, which are a key part of her wellbeing. During a recent hospital stay and rehabilitation after surgery, her carer Iwona went above and beyond. She visited Ann daily, providing reassurance, emotional support and friendship. Ann describes Iwona as someone who “did every little thing” and says she felt “really spoilt.” For her family, knowing someone so kind and capable was by her side made a huge difference.
Ann’s family told us that having a carer in place full-time has lifted the pressure they once felt when managing emergency situations. They can now plan their visits rather than reacting to crises, knowing Ann is safe and well cared for. Even when a carer wasn’t quite the right fit, the Promedica24 team took feedback on board and made adjustments quickly and respectfully. Continuity has also been key. Our carers typically stay for several weeks, which helps reduce anxiety around change and gives families confidence in the consistency of care. Ann especially looks forward to the return of her favourite carers. A familiar face goes a long way in making care feel personal.
When Ann was in hospital, her care needs were uncertain and discharge plans were unclear. Promedica24 remained f lexible throughout, keeping support in place and adjusting arrangements as needed. This kind of responsiveness has been a major reassurance to the family, who felt genuinely supported throughout the process.
Ann’s family would recommend that others speak with Promedica24 to explore care options. Their experience has been that the service is well-matched to individual needs, thoughtfully managed and delivered with genuine care. Most importantly, it has allowed Ann to remain in the place she loves, her own home, without the fear of being alone or struggling with day-to-day life.
