Playing is all about learning, exploring and building positives relationships- all things that start right from birth.

Here's two key things to consider when playing with your newborn baby:

1. It's never too early to start playing with your baby! Playtime can be based around your interaction together (young babies don't need toys- your face and voice are the perfect toys). Talking and singing when your baby is awake, calm and alert are great ways to build your baby's brain and enjoy the bond between you.

2. Playtime and interacting takes a lot of energy and regulation for babies as they need to process all the sensory information coming at them. With this in mind, keep an eye on the cues your baby will give you for needing a break and be ready to stop playing. Newborn babies' awake periods are short at this stage but as time goes on your baby will stay awake for longer periods of time and you will be able to play for longer 😊

Our UK system is obviously a bit different but still worth a read. So makes sense that a summer born child potentially could struggle purely for not having been on the planet for so long! The best form of education for young children is PLAY of course...when will our government recognise this?!

Here’s my little people and I being interviewed with our amazing obstetrician. Cannot emphasise enough how important it is that the team looking after multiples are following NICE guidelines for multiples (2013, QS46). Not all hospitals do and so if you’re pregnant with twins or more make sure they are. If they aren’t, politely ask them to do so, if they won’t change hospitals - we did and are so glad we did! I cannot even think about what outcome we may have had had we not. TAMBA led on a three year project regarding this and have done an amazing job to spread awareness and better practice but sadly some hospitals aren’t quite there yet. Don’t let your children be an unnecessary statistic of prematurity! 👶👶

SO, SO, SO important that sensory needs are addressed in NICU. As a paeds OT & as a mummy of twins (& hence NICU was talked about a lot which for us we were lucky to not have to utilise), I feel so passionate about this.

To anybody who is expecting twins - ask your hospital about twin growth charts! Not every hospital knows about them and it potentially changed the outcome for our boys. See my piece in the Multiple Matters magazine (Tamba’s magazine) this month!
