BlackCat Workshop is a small woodworking business based near Stamford Bridge, York. Run by Neil 'Sid' Porteus, using over 30 years experience of making most things wooden! The business has/is constantly having to change due to countless issues! From a fire in 2016, through Covid 19 and CofL turmoil and in Jan 2025 suffering a stroke and battling to keep operating...

I'm now mainly specialising in smaller woodwork projects that can be made in my workshop. Please check my posts for updates, products made, prices etc. I'm not a stockist, items are mainly made to order but i do try to keep some smaller items in stock. Bespoke job enquiries will always be considered but I don't have access to many types of wood and have limited tools so unfortunately some jobs can't be taken on. Never any harm in asking though!

I've had a number of lovely additional followers recently and as I've never really introduced myself I thought I'd say hello! 👋 I'm Sid (or Neil on Sundays!) I've been making outdoor type wooden things for most of my life, it's what I love doing, making things for people that hopefully cheers them up!

I'm located half a mile north of Stamford Bridge at the former Woodend Sawmill site, which is shared with two other friendly businesses, Vintage Cast Iron Radiators Ltd and Free Range Kitchen Yorkshire.

I had to downsize a couple of years ago and so I now have very limited space, especially to store materials/stock etc so I tend to make most things to order (lead times are never too long!) I do try to keep some of my 'smalls' in stock though.

I was known for being a shed maker for a lot of years and despite stopping making them in 2020 shed enquiries still make up around 90% of all enquiries! Sadly as soon as I mention that I no longer make sheds the phone tends to slam down, despite me rushing to say "But I do make other things!...." 🤣 The difficulty of trying to move in a different direction but at the same site as your previous life!

If you do like shopping locally and supporting genuine small independent businesses then please give BlackCat some thought, it might surprise you what you could get off an ex shed maker on your doorstep!

My most popular seats are my flat pack versions that people can collect. It also makes them 20% cheaper, which in these times seems quite appealing!

For 2026 only the most requested 'BlackCat' seats are being offered -

These are supplied flat pack for collecting. 4 pre screwed sections per seat (10 x M8 coach screws need to be screwed back in)

My 4 foot BlackCat seat is still available to order, but it is NOT possible to deliver these anymore, just collection only.

Turning wood that has had a hard life as one object into lovely gifts that put a smile on peoples faces, instead of just being needlessly discarded. 💕

Had a couple of recent enquiries about looking after garden seats.
This time of the year is a good time to get seats ready for better weather, a light sand of the flat surfaces (that rain sits on) followed by putting some clear furniture preserver on (the best stuff I've used is pictured)
Using clear treatment means you don't have to get every nook and cranny, just the easy bits, less of a chew means you're more likely to do it!
There are also steps to help the rain bubble off like the pics. Any advice needed please get in touch 💕
