10 Minutes to Calm Your Nervous System

Lying on your back with your legs up the wall puts your body in a position where it does not have to work. Your spine is supported, your muscles can relax, and there is nothing you need to hold or control.

With your legs elevated, circulation becomes easier and your body can start to slow down. When you stay still and breathe calmly, your nervous system gets the signal that it is safe to let go of tension.

A few seconds are usually not enough for this to happen. It takes a bit of time for your system to shift out of stress mode. Around ten minutes gives your body the chance to actually settle and relax.

This is not stretching and it is not exercise. Nothing is forced. You are simply allowing your body to calm itself.

If you feel tense, overwhelmed, or constantly switched on, spending ten minutes in this position can be a simple way to help your body recover.

Sciatica?

Sciatic nerve pain is not a diagnosis, it’s a symptom.

It describes pain that runs from the lower back or buttock down the leg.

The key is understanding where that irritation is coming from.

To get an idea of the root cause, notice how your symptoms behave.

If pain changes with sitting, bending, or certain back positions, the source is often the lower back.

If pain is more in the buttock and changes with walking, stairs, or standing on one leg, the hips or pelvis may be involved.

If stretching makes it worse instead of better, the nerve may be irritated rather than “tight.”

What usually helps in most cases:

• stop forcing stretches into pain

• use movements or positions that reduce leg symptoms, not increase them

• improve control and stability of the lower back before loading it

• work on hip mobility without pushing into end ranges

• walk regularly and break up long periods of sitting

The goal isn’t to push through pain.
It’s to calm the nerve, reduce unnecessary stress, and gradually restore movement and strength.

Stretching alone usually doesn’t calm a stressed nervous system.

When stress is high, the body stays in a protective, alert state. In that state, simply pulling on tissues often isn’t enough to reduce tension. The nervous system still perceives threat, so muscle tone stays elevated.

This is why slow breathing combined with controlled movement tends to work better in those situations.
Breathing helps the system downshift.
Controlled movement then reinforces safety through motion.

That said, stretching is not bad and I do recommend it in the right context.

Stretching can be very useful:
• after breathing or light movement, when the body is already calmer
• for improving range of motion in specific, restricted areas
• after training, when tissues are warm and relaxed
• when it’s done slowly and without forcing end ranges

The key is timing and intent.
If stress is high, calm the system first.
Then use stretching as a tool, not the only solution.

The nervous system doesn’t relax because you force it.
It relaxes when it feels safe.

How it helps 📍
– Spinal decompression should be the very first thing you do to treat a herniated or bulging disc because it essentially creates space between your vertebrae, and thus takes pressure off the discs.

How to do it📍
– Use a bar or the top of a door (or anything you can hang from) and allow your body to “just hang”.
– Hang for 30 seconds and do 3 sets.
– Release very slowly from this so as not to cause any spasms.

‼️This should not cause any pain. If you feel pain during it is not a good one for you. In that case, stop and try some of the other exercises below instead.
