Type 1 diabetes happens when the body can’t make a hormone called insulin, which means blood sugar levels become too high.

It can develop at any age, and if it isn’t diagnosed in time, it can be very serious. The key symptoms to look out for are the 4 Ts:

🔹 Toilet – going more often
🔹 Thirsty – being very thirsty
🔹 Tired – feeling unusually tired
🔹 Thinner – losing weight without trying

If you notice any of these signs in yourself or your child, please book an urgent GP appointment or call 111.

🚗 Parking Update – University Hospital of North Durham (UHND)

Please note that the private car park next to Melbury Court Care Home has now closed permanently due to development work.

If you’re visiting the hospital, parking may be busier than usual.

✅ Allow extra time before your appointment
✅ Consider using Durham Park and Ride – Sniperley is the closest and offers convenient bus links to the hospital

UHND would like to thank you for your patience and understanding while everyone adjusts to this change.
