These are all valid and common questions for anyone who has thought about going to counselling. Here is some advice from a counsellor.
First piece of advice, use the right platforms to answer your questions. Counselling directories and certified websites can inform you with the information to look for when searching for a counsellor. Search for counsellors who are registered with a governing body and have regular supervision in place.
Take your time in your search, and remember you're in the drivers seat. It's your choice when you start, who you work with, and when you decide to finish. It usually takes up to 3 sessions to build a rapport with a counsellor. Use the first few session to ask how they work and inform them of what you would like to work on during your time together.
Talking therapy really is such a powerful tool to access and engage in. With the right counsellor and the right conditions, it really can change your life!
